I am so frustated! For the last year I've been having lower rightsided abdominal pain with diarrhea and very smelly gas. I saw a GI last year and did an upper GI and lower GI endoscopy (Colonscopy) which revealed non specific chronic inflammation in my cecum. I went and saw my family doc two weeks ago because the pain has increased. I did an abdominal CT with barium contrast (major ick!) which only showed a contracted/small glabber. At this point, my doc wants to call it IBS. I am frustrated because nothing is helping. I've tried fiber therapy and she gave me levsin ?sp which hasn't helped. I'm also on effexor and amitryptaline which other people here have mention has helped. I'm on 150mg of effexor (for depression) and 50 mg amitryptaline for migraine preventation and neither of those has helped the diarrhea. Also tried Activa with no success. Any suggestions? The only thing I haven't been tested for is celiac but since I had small bowel biospys with my endoscopy (normal) it seems unlikely I have that.

Hi Julia,
Welcome to the IBS Forum!
What was the reason your GI gave for the inflammation found during your scope? Was it due to the prep? Only reason I ask is because inflammation is not common with IBS.
Have you tried taking Calcium? It will ease the D and soothe inflammation. How long did you try Activia? It should be eaten consistantly for at least 2 weeks. Sometimes it helps to eat 2 a day. How about
a probiotic supplement?

My GI thought the inflammation was from the prep. My family doc says if it was the prep it would show acute inflammation NOT chronic. My family doc says it's hard to know what is since it's nonspecific. She says if it's a colitis etiology usually the pathologist says so. I take daily calcium, and have tried activia for almost a month now. I just want the pain to go away.

Julia,
Since you mentioned the Pathologist, I'm assuming you had biopsies taken? Can you call your doc back and ask for the results (not your family doc, but the GI doc that scoped you)?
How much calcium are you taking? You can take from 1500-1800mg a day without causing kidney damage. Maybe if you're just taking 600mg you could boost it to 1200mg. Of course you have to take into consideration the constipating effects and any interractions with other meds you may be on.

For calcium I take around 1000 mg. I do have the biopsy results. It said nonspecific chronic inflammation for the cecum all other biopsies were normal. I have the copies of the reports that both doctors received.

What exactly does that mean "nonspecific chronic inflammation"? It means they attribute it to the prep and send you on your way?

Well, my family doc says its hard to say what it is but it's not the prep. It's inflammation but not neccesarily colitis. Since my adominal CT was clear, I think she's going to treat it as IBS-D and if I don't improve refer me to a GI. I'm also frustrated because it seems I keep snowballing into more autoimmune diseases and I'm only 23.

and they're sure it's not crohn's or ulcerative colitis?

Julia, you are on some pretty heavy medications some. I wonder if some of these could be causing a problem. Some I am not familiar with but most I am and wonder if there could be a problem. If you had a colonoscopy you must have had a GI Doctor. Is there some reason why you have to wait to see them.
