Hey Keri,
I actually did have amoebic dysentery when I was in Africa. A lot of the symptoms I'm experiencing are the same; the only difference is that I don't always get them at the same time, like I did in Africa. While I was there, my fever would reach 104, the abdominal cramps would be intense, the diarrhea was constant, and sometimes I'd vomit for good measure. Now, everything is so intermittent, and I rarely have a temp over 101. Plus, if I were still infected with amoebas, something would have likely shown up on my liver MRI or a CT scan, but nothing has.
Yesterday I had a lot of diarrhea and noticed more blood. Usually if I see blood it's pretty clear it's just from my bum being sore, but yesterday there was quite a bit more. I think I am going to see the new GI. My sister (a family doc) said offhand in an e-mail that all this treatment with Flagyl may not necessarily be such a good idea, but she didn't say why.
I really don't want to start medical school with any of these problems, yikes. Although the nurse practitioner said that when I do go, I'd probably get lots of interest from my professors and fellow med students, since they like knowing all the "weird stuff!"
