Can you have too much gas?

I probably would of went to the ER if your stomach hurt that bad. I never really had a stomach ache, but just plain miserable with GAS, BLOATING and nausea. My father passed away from a perforation and thought he had the flu. I don't mess around anymore when it comes to my belly or intestines.

I have had bad gas with rumbling. Did you take anything?

Based on the comments from others on here who have gone to the ER for gas, there's nothing they can give you to make it go away, but they are sometimes merciful and give you pain killers so it's bearable until it goes away on its own. You need to ask your doctor if it's safe to have that much gas. I'm kind of inclined to believe that it won't kill you, based on some of the intestines I've seen on medical shows that were stretched out HUGE with impactions, but it never hurts to check with your doctor to see what you should do if this situation comes up again. Also ask if there's such a thing as prescription-strength Gas-X or something similar. If there's nothing stronger he can give you, ask how many Gas-X pills it's safe to take in an hour/day and hit them hard if this happens again. You might also see if you can wrangle some pain pills out of him.

Sarita - no, I didn't take anything. I "assumed" it was gas actually, especially since I ended up with a whopper case of D when it started to subside. Hmmm...now I'm wondering if I had an attack of something instead. All I know is that my right side from under my ribs to where my appendix scar is, is very sore - like I've been horse kicked. My crohn's is at my ileum (a couple of lovely strictures there) - maybe I had a partial blockage or something? No telling... but today, I've been doing saltines and water! Blech...

Horrible right-side pain that last for hours, followed by diarrhea, with tenderness on the right-side afterwards?  Ever had that gall bladder checked out? 

Middle of the night is actually a classic example of a gall bladder attack. Most of mine came at night, hours after last eating. Caffeine was the absolute worst for me-- much more so than pizza or fried things. And boy, when that attack happens, you have to be UP! Lying down makes you feel sicker. I haven't met a person yet who could lie down while having a gall bladder attack. I used to pace the floors because moving around was the only thing that helped even a tiny little bit. Then the sickness would start to build and I would go sit on the toliet and hold the trashcan because it felt like I was either going to expel out of both ends or just explode and die. Then I would finally have a bowel movement or two and slowly the sick feeling would start to go away and I'd fill up my hot water bottle and then go back to bed. But even then I couldn't lay down yet; I'd prop myself up on pillows, put my hot water bottle on my belly and suddenly be very tired and chilled. Then I would go back to sleep.

I can't recall that I got a bloated distension when I was having an attack, but I did, at other times, have what felt like gas pains, and I noticed that I no longer pooted or burped. It's like it all stayed in there and wouldn't come out. I found that chewable gas tables helped ease the gas pains in the stomach right after eating.

I often was sore the day after an attack, I guess because the muscles cramp up so tight for so long. I also usually had D the next day too. Is your D at all yellow or green in hue? Does it burn like fire when you poop?

So here's something not comforting for you: I had a bad gall bladder for 5 years. It was only on my third hidascan that it finally showed up as not working properly.

I've had horrible gas pain followed by D before.  I could feel the rumblings and the rock hard abdomen - there was no mistaking it was gas.  I noticed it happened when I ate a lot of sugar and forgot to take my probiotics or eat my Activia.  I assumed it was just a bunch of bad bacteria and yeast taking over.  Could this be the same for you?  Did you drink a glass of apple juice (aka "gas in a can")? 

I would be inclined to say it's the "sugar free" York. Fake sugar does a number on people with gut trouble. BUT, if you say you're OK with them, then I'm at a loss....? Sorry hon, sorry you had to go through that. I hope you're feeling better.

Sugar Free York Peppermint Patties have sugar alcohol(s) in them (my husband gets them sometimes). The only thing worse than a gall bladder attack, for me, is a dose of sugar alcohols. I definitely get the loud rumblings and fluttering in my guts. I mean, my husband can clearly hear my guts making noise. And it feels like I have a dozen small birds flying around loose in my intestinal tract. The D is normal (no bile), but it usually stinks to the high heavens. The definitely cause gas in people because I can tell when my husband's had some of his candies; he gets terribly stinky gas and a lot of it! When my mother first discovered the sugar-free chocolate, she had a number of Easter eggs (even gave the dog a couple). Then she went to church. Boy, that was the longest hour she'd ever had to endure! She said she had such terrible gas cramps but didn't dare let it out in church because they were so terribly stinky. The dog got thrown out of the house that day too because she was so stinky too.

I know you said that you've been okay taking sugar alcohols before, but I actually built up something like an allergy to them. First I could eat a serving of sugar-free wafers, then I could have only a piece or two of candy without suffering diarrhea, and then I had a lot of D after eating a creamsicle with about 2 grams of sugar alcohol in it, but the last time I accidently had some--1 gram in two pieces of gum--I was in the bed for two days with horrible pain, diarrhea, and the above-mentioned rumblings and flutterings. In fact, it took me a couple of months to fully recover after that last bout because I kept having a lot of pain and diarrhea every day, even though the rumblings and diarrhea stopped. I finally got straightened back out with calcium and upping my usual Welchol dose. I now tell people that I'm allergic to it, because an honest-to-God allergic reaction can't be worse than the reaction that I have. I'd hate to think what 1 gram would do to me now; everytime I have eaten sugar alcohols, it took less and less of them to get a reaction out of me, and the reaction grew more and more severe.

If I were you, I'd put them on my list of forever-banned substances. I even tell my doctors and pharmacy that I'm allergic to them so that they don't prescribe me any in any medicines (some chewables are starting to have it in them--Digestive Advantage is one of them).
