Hello again

Not been in touch for a while but the IBS is back with a vengeance it seems. Loads of painful trapped gas and very soft first thing. I had improved quite a lot but we have experienced rather a stressful time recently with one thing and another so maybe that explains a lot.

I got so confident I had improved that I started on the salads which I really like in the summer. NOOOO not a good idea - could all these raw veggies and fruit have triggered things again?

Hope you are all coping. This IBS really does get you down at times doesn't it?

Oh well. I managed to see a peregrine falcon on a birding trip recently so that lifted me a lot.

Some people can't deal with lettuce at all, but I have found a DEFINITE difference between fresh lettuce and bagged pre-cut salads. I started getting D when I was in college (before I had other problems), and when I talked to my mother about what was suddenly causing it, she had me run through all the foods I was eating. When I got to the part about having a salad every day, she said bingo, that's the culprit. Apparently they put some sort of chemical on cut lettuce to keep it from turning brown. This can cause D in some people, especially if you eat it frequently, as I was doing. I quit eating the school's salad bar and the D suddenly stopped. I told my husband this when he asked why I always bought a head of iceberg lettuce instead of bag-o-lettuce. A while later he said that he had been having D off and on for a week and he wondered if it was from his salad? He switched to buying a head of lettuce, like me, and D problem went away.

Whoa - I didn't think of this either. I've heard they spray salads on salad bars though. Back when there was a bagged spinach e-coli scare I vowed not to buy bagged salads.

But here of late, I've been buying them again.

I think I'm going back to making my own salads. I have heard you should wash each large piece of lettuce, front and back, if using Romaine for example. Then after cutting or tearing into pieces, wash again in a colander. A double washing. To be sure it's very clean.

Bagged salads - who knew!

And you know what one of the most simple salads for us is don't you - iceberg lettuce wedges! Sooooo easy to make.....drizzle any salad dressing you like on it. Of course I have a picky family so they think this isn't really a salad......hubby's into all these new fangled salads, baby greens with dried fruit, feta cheese and candied nuts. Ugh....
