On vacation and cant go pooo????

Hi, I had my total colectomy in Feb 19,2010, on Vacation and have not gone to the bathroom for 3 day....should I be worried, ???  Tried a fleet enema to no avail, called my surgeon, she is in surgery...does anyone have any idea what I can do?  So sick to my stomach, its all bulgded out, have trapped air I am sure, not no bubbles moving in my intestines....HELP

I have a few suggestions that seem to work for me (but I never seem to get constipated but rather my insides sometimes feel constricted and swollen, where my resection was located and so I don't quite get into a C state but close to it).

1. Sip several cups of hot black tea (with caffeine preferably).

2. Drink full glasses of water. I just stand at the kitchen sink and down them (I don't really like water!).

3. Massage the stomach area.

4. Use a heating pad on the stomach.

5. Eating canned fruit (pears are good for this).

6. Finally, exercise - just walk in your hotel or rental, or go up and down a flight of stairs, several times. All good tactics I use to get things moving.

I think Marsky gave some good ideas and hope you feel better.

Hopefully you can get in touch with your surgeon soon and also ask them.

Hey all, I am back..thank you for all you kind words...the word vacation means Hospital to me just got of of the hosptial for 4 days.  I had illisus, so they put in the NG tube and no food , lots of meds...lost 9 lbs...that I could not afford to lose but kind of feel better, plus the put me on lactulose, now anint that the craps...but very weak , just got up from a 3 hr nap and feeling out of it so will post laster...still with ya all...

Hey guys had that ever happened to you.  My intestines would not wake up and my bladder would not work either?  Does this sometimes happen after a Total Colecotmy?  Or is it that I should have not gone on vacation...lol...just wondering...hope everyone is well.  Dont have the energy to catchup on everyone tonight, the drugs are still in my system so all I can do is sleep...so off the bed onece again.

Oh Leslie - you are a trip. Hospital = vacation. That's a new one!!!!

No I never had trouble waking up the bladder (just the intestines, for that I had to walk-walk-walk the nurses kept saying). I know that nurses can come in and do a straight cathadar on you to relieve the bladder, hoping the next time you can go by yourself.

I certainly hope things calm down for you.

You went from one extreme to the other didn't you? Hang in there.....thinking about you and wishing you much better days ahead.

You do have a great attitude though. Don't ever lose your comical, positive outlook - you never know when you'll need it again!

Marsky,  thanks so much hun..boy the durgs they gave me kept me sleeping most of the day yeasterday. 
Today must be withdrawling, shaking, rapid heart, but in a good mood, just hecka tired...wow.  See I did not stay on strictly turkey when I came down here had a taco one day a very small one and a sm hamburger the next day. 
So my doc in oregon said to keep to my normal diet and I should be ok.  Scared the shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttttttttttssss out of me...like OMG have I like others been through enough...so strictly turkey for now on till I get home. 
Things always go wrong when I vacation, last year when I was down here I was also in the hospital for 4 day with what they thought was Acute IBS attack.  So no more vacations for me till I am settled in my new plumbing.  I am too scared to eat anything different, dont want anything bad to happen.  but shaking too much to write as I keep hitting the worong letter, so till later my friends.  Have a wonderful day, and I will have a vibrateing one..LOL

Leslie your doctor is here in Oregon? I ran two support groups in the state for quite a while.

They also do some IBS research in Portland.

Yes my doc is in Oregon I am in California right now on vacation.  I am doing much better today, sticking to turkey, seems to work best for me.  Thanks for your continuing support, don't know what I would have done with out this site..

Leslie, hope your still feeling better and if you have a good doctor in Oregon let me know, because it may also help others here as a recommendation.

My surgeon who did my Total Colectomy is Dr. Bret R. Hansen MD., 2801 N.W. Mercy Drive Sutie 330, Roseburg Oregon 97471,  Ph # 541-677-3600/Fax 541-677-3601.  He was the only doc that really listened to me and really cared about how sick I was and did one final test, that I had taken before the Sitz Marker Test.  I saw him on a Monday and he operated on that Friday.  He is just a very specail doc and I cannot say enough good things about him...

Hello All, well I have been on vacation and just got out of the hospital for the 2nd time in for 4 day out for 2 and back in for 4 .  Had to make them release me to chatch my flight home tomorrow.  Will catch you all up later, it was just more of the same.  Never going to Calif on vacation again.  Spent a whole 2 days not being ill.  This really sucked.  So when I get home and rested up with chat with you all later...Love Leslie

THANK YOU SO MUCH....  I CANT GET MY INTESTINES TO QUIT FEELING LIKE THEY ARE BUBBLEING OUT OF CONTROL, THEY FEEL LIKE THEY ARE SWELLING AND SWELLING, AND BURNING...  I FEEL LIKE I DID WHEN I WENT INTO THE HOSPITAL.  SO I HOPE THAT ADDING THE GATORADE TO MY DAILY INTAKE HELPS THINGS MELLOW OUT...FOR GOD SAKES...TOMORROW IS MY BIRTHDAY AND MY FRIENDS HAVE PLANS FOR ME AND I JUST WANT TO FEEL WELL ENOUGH TO GO...THIS IS MY PRAYER FOR TONIGHT...

Dear honestwoman,

Your post caught my eye.

My hubby had surgery in February and ended up with an ileus, NG, hyperal, Antibiotics etc. It was a 16 day stay for him. He has Crohn's. He has had 4 bowel surgeries now but no osotomy to date. I empathize with you and appreciate how tough this has been on you.

Kitt   Hello, and thank you.  Today I am feeling a bit better so I think that the gatorade is helping me or maybe I am finally coming out of the cycle I am in.  At least that is what I am hoping.  So I am going to my party tonight, just hope that I feel as good as I do right at this moment.

I have been under tremendous stress for some time now and I think that added to my problems..so getting that under control.
