NEW ORLEANS -- The heterogeneous nature of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) continues to pose challenges for clinicians and patients in choosing the best treatment, said a prominent researcher here.

In this exclusive InFocus™ report, Brennan Spiegel, MD, of the University of California Los Angeles, talked with MedPage Today senior editor John Gever about the advances reported here at Digestive Disease Week in understanding and treating IBS.

Although promising results were presented for several new treatment approaches, each is likely to benefit only a minority of patients, Spiegel said.

Clinicians still must pay close attention to individual patients' specific symptoms while remembering that pain and discomfort are the key to all disorders within the functional bowel disease family.

I feel like a human puzzle - managing my symptoms effectively works best if all the puzzle pieces are in place (diet, meds such as stool softener and probiotic, small/light meals, exercise, keeping a quiet, low stress lifestyle). But if one is missing, look out. I'm a mess.
