Hello, I'm new to this forum. Let me start off by saying I was diagnosed when I was 13 with IBS-D . I've dealt with it , Over the years. I've had two children never got worse , I thought it actually made it better. Until lately, Over the last 2 months my IBS-D has gotten worse, And When I say worse I mean 10times. Everytime I eat 30 mins later I'm in the bathroom at least twice. Doesn't matter what I eat or Drink now. I've lost 20 pounds in the last 2mths from my IBS-D getting worse. I now weigh 102lbs. I was 122 and I was happy with it. Stress was a big factor for IBS-D in the past and I thought I learned to manage to deal with it. But this time around It's controlling me . I've tried the whole fiber in my diet and It seemed to help until 2months ago. The thing is all my stress is at a bare minimal right now. Has been I just dont understand what is happening. My stomach always has warned me like 20 mins before I have a episode now it doesn't . I've got lucky so far but just don't no how much longer I will be. I have a full time job and 2 children. I have to care for. I just was hoping anyone might have some advice for me.

Welcome to Healing Well, Lilian! I'm sorry that you are having such severe issues. I was told I had a "spastic colon" and I lived with the diarrhea and cramping for years. That was until I became housebound by the diarrhea. Turns out I didn't have IBS but rather inflammatory bowel disease.

Just because you were told that you had IBS a long time ago doesn't mean it was correct the first time or that it still is true. Your weight loss is a BIG red flag. Losing that much weight in 2 months without trying is not something normal to IBS. I'm not saying that you have something like I do but...

You need to get to your doctor and let him/her know what's going on. You most likely need an evaluation by a gastroenterologist.

i wanted to say thank you for the reply i went back to the doctor theyre sending me additonal testing i go wendesday we'll see what happens thank you lilly

Get a test for Celiac. In lots of cases it takes 6 years to diagnose Celiac because everyone thinks they have IBS, including the doctors.

They thought I had IBS for years and then of course my meds were not working so they gave me a Blood test and my Gluten levels were sky high. Then had a biopsy and sure enough I had Celiac. I have been 100% gluten free and I am 99%. its took so long to find out what I had. I used to tell people I knew what I didn't have.

weight loss is a red flag for IBS.

However, its strange she has been dealing with this for so long and it hasn't gotten worse until recently and even got better with pregnancy, which can happen. IBS can get worse or better with pregnancy.

It could be a bad flare or something else but worth asking about the celiac sprue. Its also doesn't mean you can't develop another problem if you have IBS down the road.

If there are new symptoms or its just worse the best thing is to check back with a doctor.

Kim, IBSers digest foods and nutrients normally.

Weight loss IS a "red flag."

The exception is, if the weight loss is from not eating for fear of pain and symptoms.

But if a person is eating normally and losing weight, that is a "red flag."

IBS can present with other GI problems, including malabsorption. To say that IBSers digest foods normally does not coincide with my personal experience.

I have just started the IBS hypnotherapy program available at ibsaudioprogram.com. I feel it is already helping, after only 5 days.

Another big help for me has been in figuring out my food triggers and my "good foods." I am a sugar free, gluten free, nut free and bean free vegan as a result. Fresh fruits and veggies, cream of rice, and herbal peppermint tea enjoyed hot are my daily staples, along with relaxation. Finally, frequent small meals instead of three big meals works better for me. The diet took time to figure out and accept, but the pain and suffering prior to this diet motivates me--if I can avoid an attack or lessen its likelihood or severity, I will eat and act accordingly.

Don't give up. Your answer is there, you just need to find it.
