Constipated diarrhoea? Sharp pains when passing stool?

One of the things that I get often is what I call constipated diarrhoea. But I've never heard of anyone else having this before. It's when I go to the toilet, and push, and push; and then a bit of watery stool will come out within a couple seconds; then I have to push again to get the next lot out... it's really weird! Of course, sometimes it's uncontrollable diarrhoea too, where it comes out without my permission. Does anyone else get constipated diarrhoea?

I get this sharp pain in my left side when I do a BM. Is this normal for IBS? Could it indicate something more serious? The pain is getting worse lately and I have actually been scared of going to the toilet because of it in the last few days.

While I can't give you a medical diagnosis based upon your symptoms, I know that either Citracel or Metamucil might be beneficial to you. You shouldn't be straining this much to go. Looking upon your bio, I'm sure you're aware of fiber supplements but if not, start with low doses (1/3 to 1/2 the recommended dosage), then work your way up to a full dose. Good luck. Thanks for your replies! I have tried various forms of fibre and not found any of them to be very helpful. Interesting... I am on the waiting list at 3 hospitals for an endoscopy and colonoscopy, mostly because the doctor suspects Crohn's disease (but I hadn't told him about those symptoms I just mentioned yet).
