Anyone on here living with UC and IBS and constantly not feeling well? I don't ever feel "normal" My stomach always makes noises and I think its more the IBS than the UC but my GI doc won't listen to me. I have bloody mucous discharge and i've been putting off having children till I "get better" but I feel like that will never happen. I eat fruits or veggies with every meal, steel cut oats. My doc has changed up my meds but nothing seems to work. He prescribed me 3 800 MG asacol twice a day, 2 colace pills once a day and 25 MG amitriptyline. I feel like he thinks its in my head but my stomach is constantly irritated and bloated and I don't know what to do to help it. I also drink about a gallon of water every day. I was taking Lexapro for my IBS but it started making me bleed so I got off it. I turn 30 in April and my husband and I had agreed to start a family no later than then but I don't know if I can when I feel this bad every day. Is this just what normal life is like for a person with both of these conditions?

Do you have diarrhea or constipation? Or is it just the noises and bloody mucous? I am wondering why you are taking stool softeners. If you have diarrhea then I would stop those or cut back.

Also, asacol does not agree with everyone. In some people it can make their symptoms worse. Look up the side effects of asacol and see if some are what you are experiencing.

Also, if your GI won't listen to you, have you thought about going for a second opinion or changing
GIs?

I am more on the constipated/bloated side which he said i'm eating the right foods but they cause gas. He told me to take two colace pills to help ease that pressure but I still feel bloated throughout the day or my stomach makes noises all day.

I changed GI docs but their are only two different groups of docs in my city and I left the other one cuz he wouldn't listen to me. There are 4 docs within each practice but I hate moving back and forth.

Everyone please beg your doctor to go in with a light and look at the outside surfaces of the bowel. If the bowel has stuck-together in places it is adhesions and the bowel cant move around, stretch, or push stool along. This does not show on colonoscopy, or cat scan, or Barium enema. They have new techniques to loosen up the adhesions. ( laparoscopic surgery) Every time you get a severe event it will stretch and almost tear and cause more adhesions! Reasons for adhesions: constant overstretching, infection, surgery, endometriosis, viruses). Results in temporary blockage, and rebound spasm where the bowel overreacts to stretching by spasming. After ten years I finally added it all up. (But now the bowel is gone, it went useless and twisted). The docs made lots of money telling me I didn't have cancer and it was all in my head. Get someone to go with you who will help tell the MD he has to do something.

Try eliminating fruit and see if you have fewer symptoms.

I have UC and IBS. It took a lot of diet changes to get my UC under control but I still react to certain foods that can cause symptoms.

Doctors have very little training or understanding of how diet causes problems so start looking out for yourself. Keeping a food diary will give you clues. Don't think that if you react to fruit or dairy (another common problem) you have to give it up forever. After things calm down you might be able to eat it again, at least I've been able to.

If you are bleeding that's a UC symptom and using mesalamine enemas can help a lot. Ask for a prescription (insist).
