My background:
============
I had a perianal abscess drained on Feb 14th 2014 under general anesthetic. During the surgery, the surgeon detected a fistula in-ano and performed a fistulotomy. I had a rubber tube placed in the
opening, which was removed 2 weeks post the surgery. Since then the fistula is
open, it bleeds quite a bit and drains a yellow discharge. Still I am much better now since the soreness and pain in the region is reduced. I do get occasional pain when it bleeds more and becomes slightly sore. (The surgeon told me that bleeding is a signal that new tissue is forming.)
My concern:
==========
This is my question or concern.The general surgeon who operated on me told me that "he could not do much during first surgery since I had high chance of incontinence". He also said that there is a "high chance that I might need another surgery" and that "he is scared that fistula might recur". I haven't been is a good mental state during all my visits to question him back on what he means. Also, all these statements he makes scare the s**t out of me (which anyway is scary since I had that surgery
)
After some online reading I figured that laying
opening technique is only used for superficial fistulas. If mine as he says "can cause incontinence", then why did he lay it
open? What are the chances that my fistula however complex would just heal itself this way? Since its still draining and bleeding (which my surgeon says will continue for another month) when can I finally know if it is healed entirely or is back? Also, should I consult a colo-rectal specialist or continue relying on him since I am better now?
I know these are a lot of questions and would appreciate anyone sharing similar experiences or any help with my questions.
