I have noticed that for the past couple of weeks that everytime I have D, I immediately develop a spliting headache afterwards. I can't figure it out and nothing I can find identifies the two together. Does anyone else have this problem?

Hi Des,
Do you think you could be dehydrated? People who get drunk and develop a "hangover headache" get them because they release too much water while consuming alcohol. I once read that 9 out of 10 times if you drink a full glass of water when you have a headache it will go away. I never tried it because I think it sounds like bull - but who knows, it could be true.

That certainly makes sense Lil. I am curious though since it happens immediately after. Almost always as I am walking out of the bathroom. (You think its the smell??? LOL... if it was though, how come this is new?) I'm so frustrated. I hate to call my GI for every little thing and did a search and nothing. Well let me go try to drink that glass of water and see what happens... I will try anything right now. I'll hold out on the tylenol for a few minutes

Well, you know several of us noticed we were all having joint pain, even though most of us were too young to be having that sort of problem yet. It may be that IBS causes pain in other parts of the body for some reason but no medical person has made that connection. Because it does seem odd that you would hurt in your joints or your head when your problem is in your stomach, but traditional Chinese acupuncturists will tell you that everything is interconnected and that a problem in one place will cause problems all over because it throws the body and the meridians out of balance.
I read an interesting article on msn's Slate a while back about
a woman who went to China because she was having such horrible shoulder pain and the doctors here couldn't find what was causing it and acupuncture here costs a good arm and a leg and she could fly to China and get many treatments for cheaper than getting a few in NYC. She saw a couple of different doctors and told them that she was there for her shoulder. They took her pulse and smelled her breath and looked at her tongue and told her no, the problem wasn't her shoulder, it was her heart. Which really floored this lady because she had had a heart condition as a child and even now she has some type of irregular heartbeat but no Western doctor notices it unless she's on a heart monitor. Both docotrs said this independently of each other and without looking at her medical records. So she got some acupuncture and massage aimed at helping her heart and she was starting to notice some improvement in her shoulder, but she ran out of money before she could do all of the treatments and within a few weeks of coming back home her shoulder had relapsed. Does make you wonder how much our doctors know and if other forms of medicine might be effective. I wonder if anyone has tried acupuncture for their IBS?

Well I ended up having to take the tylenol. Thanks though Lil... it was worth a try.
Keri, I haven't tried acupuncture but I am really interested in doing so. I have just been lazy about
finding out more. I would also be interested to find out if anyone here has tried it and what the results were.

I seem to recall this coming up before and no one responded then about
having had it done. You may have to be our test case.

Sorry Des, I knew it sounded like bull. When I told you about
it I did some digging in all my junk and I found where I heard that.... Once I took a 'How to manage stress' course and they gave me a bunch of handouts. I found in the lot one about
headaches and techniques to combat them. One technique was drinking a glass of water. Then it says to try drinking another if the first doesn't work. Also, do relaxing breathing and maybe even meditate. We did this in class once and the girl in our class who had a headache said it went away by the time we were done.
Well, I hope you are feeling better today.
Take care.

Lil, It probably does work but I think its the cause of the headache that determines it. I don't know what keeps causing mine, I just know it happens when I have D and I am at a loss on any theory. Your dehydration made perfect sense to me and drinking water I'm sure would help with a dehydration headache. I appreciate your advice. Anything and every advice helps. I'm sure happy to hear that you are feeling better today :)
