I am severly bloated and constipation, and swelling in legs.

I   had a normal bowel movement today and now i am

seeing bloody mucus. this is new for me, i have never did this before.

I am going for a upper gi endoscopy on Friday the 14.

Should i go and see my doc before the procedure?

Is this normal?

last week when i saw my family doc before i was scheaduled

for the endoscopy he mentioned a possible bowel obstruction.

can anyone give me some info on symptoms of bowel obstruction, could i be in danger there is one?

Bloody mucus sounds a lot like an IBD to me angel. Of course there can be blood in IBS caused by hemmies however not very likely if mixed with mucus. I can't believe that your family doctor let you go home thinking you have a bowel obstruction. If that is what he thought, that can mean serious trouble and is considered a medical emergency. If you are having a normal bowel movement, I would think that a bowel obstruction would be out of the question. If you haven't already, I would definitely talk to your GI about the blood.

HI Angel,

I agree with des, I cannot believe your doctor let you go home thinking that.  If he seriously thought it was a bowel obstruction you would have been admitted to hospital.  You would have nausea and vomiting and wouldnt be able to pass a stool.

The blood could be caused by hemmies, a fissure or a rectal ulcer.  Try not to worry but you need some further advice from a doctor on this matter.

An endoscopy won't help explain the blood. See if you can get a colonoscopy added in with that procedure while you're there.

He did tell me he thought i had a bowel obstruction and did send me home. I did an ennama trying to get some relieve and that is when i had the bowel movement with the mucus and blood, untelling how long it had been there, i know that is the first bowel movement i have had in 5 days. all day to day i kept feeling like i had to go and i would cramp really bad and had cold sweat come over and i thought i was going to faint but no bowel movement.

today my belly looks as if i am ready to give birth. and the pain is terrible. the pain is above my belly button but not between the ribs. it hurts when i move, i have laid on the couch most of the day.

angel, An IBD is an inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis).

I answered your other post, saying that you need a new doctor. This isn't making sense. Your doctor doesn't appear concerned enough with all your symptoms. When did you last have an OB/GYN check up? Something isn't right here, and your doc doesn't seem up to the challenge.

I agree with Cathy... you have too many symptoms and suggested diagnosis' to take this situation lightly. Bowel obstructions and bloody mucus both shouldn't be taken lightly and concerns me that your doc doesn't even want to investigate further. By stating all you need is an upper endoscopy is confusing at best. Is this a GI doctor you are seeing or a regular PCP?

You might need to just go to the emergency room and tell them that you haven't had a bowel movement in x days and that when you last had one, you had to use an enema and you got bloody mucus with it as well. That could indicate some significant damage to your colon. If you have an IBD, then it's somewhat par for the course, but most (not all, though) people with IBDs have diarrhea. Mention to them that a previous doctor said he thought you had a blockage, but then didn't do anything about it. If you do have one, then you're only going to get worse and further damage your colon by letting things back up in there. You need some tests run now, not later, and you need to get your bowels working again now, not later. You can have a partial blockage that will allow some things to come through, but even that has to be fixed or it will get worse. Constipation of your magnitude is very, very serious. I don't want to scare you, but I don't want you to ruin your intestines either and it just doesn't sound like your doctor is concerned enough.

When you get your endoscopy I would also recommend you get a colonoscopy as well. Bloody mucous is a sign of IBD and you really dont want that to go untreated. When caught in the begining the chances of having a relapse is less than waiting to treat your condition. I really hope its not IBD.

There are quite a few IBDers who have constipation over D. If you havent gone to the bathroom in 4-5 days I would go to the ER and have them check you out as this might be a sign of mega toxic colon which is very serious. Better be safe than sorry.

today i went and got my medical records from every place i have been seen.

a KUB on 3/4/06 stated that i have a 3 mm calcification within the bowel. what does this mean? a KUB is a normal x ray i think.
this was done one night i had to go to er because i hadn't had a bowel movement in 7 days and was very ill. but the er doctor sent me home with no meds. nothing! he just told me that everything looked normal.

a week later i went to another er and they gave me golytly and i was on the toilet all nite and didn't have a bowel movement unless i do an ennama. i cannot go on my own. and lately i have just been using soappy water to try and get some relieve but very little comes out and i get week and have cold sweat like i am going to pass out and have to lay down for awhile. i am to the point to where i don't even want to eat and i am afraid that its only going to make me worse by not eating.

i have had check ups with 3 different gyn and all i get is there is cyst on my ovary and one is enlarged and fluid in my pelvic. and i have a fibroid. and i had cervical cancer in 97 and had a freeze treatment for that.

and on some of the other medical recods i have is saying that i have a cystic liver and pancreas.

i do have a kidney disease (polycystic kidney disease) i only have one funtioning and they both have cyst and on my left kidney (non fuctioning) is a 2 cm adreanal cyst. and i have a history of kidney stones as well.

i have had my gallbladder removed (had over 100 gallstones)
back in 98 i think.

just wanted to let u know of some other things i have had problems with.

by the way i am 33 with 2 wonderful children and i have had one miscarriage.

Have you ever tried something called bile salts? I wasn't able to find them in a regular drug store, but you might can at a health food or vitamin store. I read about them online. When you don't have a gall bladder to regulate your bile, you can get either constipated or have diarrhea. The former is when you have too little bile to break down your food, the latter when you have too much. The bile salts are supposed to replicate bile and help with constipation after having the gall bladder removed.

Also I found out through hard experience that, without a gall bladder, low fat diets aren't a good idea. I got really bad constipated when I went low calorie after having mine removed (why I started looking into the bile salts). You need fat to trigger bile production. If you have more fat than you have bile to break it down, you can get diarrhea. Too much bile and you can get diarrhea. Sounds like in this scenario, either way you win. Worth a shot. Some people with IBS-Cc get worse with fatty foods, but then most people with IBS-C have not had their GBs taken out either. If you're not eating much fat, you might want to try and add some in. Dairy has some good fats in it, along with meats. Avocados and olive oil and nuts are good too. And then I'm rather fond of Nutella, which I think gets a lot of its fat from cream, which is back to the dairy section. You'll want to try and avoid the bad fat products, like chips and candy and things with partially hydrogenated oils in it; those aren't good for anybody.

There are a number of women on here with IBS that also have ovarian cysts and fibromyalgia. I can't help but think there's a link there of some sort. It's all in there close together. Can't recall if they have D or C or both. Are they sure you don't have a cyst/tumor growing or pressing in on your intestines and causing a blockage or a kink?

Is it possible that you have polycystic ovarian disease? It affects more than just your ovaries and causes alot of problems.
Your case is very complicated. Are you saying that you use an enema alot?

no i do not use enamas alot just in the past few days as the doctor told me to. the first time i have ever used one was the nite i went to the er which was about 3 weeks ago and they told me to use it before the golytly.

I'm wondering if the doc meant you had an impaction and not an obstruction. Still, very curious about his choices.
