OK. I have something significant to add to this discussion. I've had that deep anal pain off and on since high school. I'm male and now in my mid-40's, and I get it about once a month. I NEVER knew what it exactly was until about a half hour ago. Wow! It is definitely proctalgia fugax. It is the most excrutiating, toe-curling pain in your ass, and there isn't a darn thing you can do about it. Here's when I get it most frequently: If during a bowel movement, I really, really push too hard, I get it afterwards. It's bad. Here's the stranger one: I get it after a particularly intense ejaculation. Awkward to get this pain after sex. Awkward to say the least. It is the EXACT SAME PAIN I get after the pushing too hard during BM thing. It is like a knife is up my rectum. It lasts for anywhere from 5 minutes, to about 30. I also occasionally get it in the middle of the night, and it will wake me out of a sound sleep, it's that bad. It's the EXACT SAME PAIN in all three instances. Well, I'm relieved there's finally a name to it. Just wanted to share.
This describes my situation pretty closely--it's somehow reassuring to know I'm not the only one. I'm 32 and this has been happening to me for about
5 years, maybe once a month. The vast majority of the time, it's immediately after ejaculation. I think in every other instance it has woken me up in the middle of the night. I don't remember it ever being associated with a bowel movement, although I often feel like that would help alleviate the pain. I'd love to hear any other suggestions people have for dealing with this, or better yet, preventing it.
