It's my fear. But sometimes it's like 'OMG I don't know if I can make it to the RR' And I have to know where the RR is everywhere I go. It's the first thing I look for. And it's funny (well not really) that if we were out then I would hold it till I got home. It was agony! Now, I don't think I can hold it. If I have to go I have to go. yeah

LOL, Kimmie - that happened to me.  In a freakin' restaurant, of all places.  I must have had a ridiculous expression on my face because my best friend said, "What the heck is wrong with you?" I jetted off to the bathroom, wrapped up my underpants in toilet paper, and threw 'em in the trash!  Oh my goodness, it was horrendous!

It's happened once or twice since then.  I always go into hysterics about it afterwards.  I guess it's either that or cry!  I prefer to laugh.

It's not just you!  I don't care where I am, the first thing I always do is look for the bathroom.  I start to freak out if it is only a 1 staller.  Even at my friends houses during parties... I will begin to panic if there is only 1 bathroom in the place.  The probability of having an accident is terrifying.
Oh, I hold it too.  I will leave in the middle of dinner if I have to.   sad   If I'm at work though, that's a different story.  I live too far to go home so I just hang my head and scurry to the RR.  Public bathrooms suck!

Yeah it's kinda funny to me too. And I HATE when I'm in a place where there is only one bathroom or one stall. I've had instances where I've made people wait outside the door for a long while. And I HATE when I do that and people keep trying to open the door. Let me have my episode in peace please!!! And the looks I get when I finally come out could kill. LOL

Unless you're terribly fond of the restaurant, I think you should come out of the restroom with a sick look on your face and whisper "Don't have the fish!" In gas stations you can warn against the hot dogs!

I've got one for you.. i've not made on a date ! We had japanese, then went for a stroll and then all the sudden, the sweat breaks out and i'm struggling to find a toilet... almost made it then, it let go. It was not very cool at all at the time... and made me very nervous every single time i went out for a while after that.

Wow...........

I had this happen to me 2 days ago - I made it............ just.  But my goodness I was terrified.  I have been getting greadually more occaissions with this feeling, but on Tuesday it was no feeling.  Walking home from a cafe with my son after a lovely lunch and didn't think we could get back to his place fast enough. 

For me it seems (I hope) to be aggravated by a new med that I've now stopped taking.  I hope this doesn't happen again, but I sure admire the attitude you've all taken.

It's highly embarrassing when it happens to you.. and guess what, it happened again to me, like as recently yesterday. Hows that for ironic. On the way to work, and couldn't find a bath room, luckily i was driving and not too far from home, so i was able to get a fresh pair of trousers quickly. But, from what i've learnt through this whole experience, is who your loved ones are... my gf's been great about it all, and accepts that this is just a sickness and there's nothing to be ashamed about.

I thought I was the only one who went through that. It's happened to me several times and it's just mortifying. I have coworkers who won't "go" in a bathroom that's not at home. I told them it must be nice to be able to have a choice. I had a store tell me I couldn't use their bathroom, so I put all my items down on the register, told them I'd never shop there again and went home (2 mi). I never shopped there again and they closed soon after. I only shop in places that have easily accessed RR's.

I'm glad I'm not alone in this...

Yes a couple of times but it was more like leaking and not a bm.  Once when I made it all the way to my house to find out I didn't have the key and nobody was home. sad   My in-laws live around the corner but I didn't make it.  The other time is when I was prepping for a colonoscopy.  Came on so suddenly and I was literally only feet away from my bathroom however I didn't make it that time either. eyes

Hey everyone,

There's a moral to this story, always carry a clean up pack :-) I have UC and can identify all your concerns, there's a saying in the British Army any fool can rough it, so I hardly ever go out without my pack which contains toilet paper, spare pants (underwear) kept in a sealable plastic sandwich bag, which prevents them getting wet if it's pouring with rain or I fall into a river etc. also comes in handy if the worst happens and you need to store your unclean underwear in a sealed bag, which prevents smells escaping, baby wipes to help clean me up just in case but also to clean that public toilet seat including flushing handle if I am fortunate enough to have sufficient time, bottle of water, and finally a lightweight camping towel which again I store in a plastic sealable sandwich bag.

All the items take up a small amount of room in a small rucksack so I still have room to keep any small items of shopping I may want to buy.

Preparation prevents poor performance, and carrying those items instills confidence that you can always sort yourself out if the need arises.

I got stuck in rush hour traffic a few weeks ago. Totally out of the blue. I managed to cut up a few people on a round-a-bout, make a few dodgy moves to the other side and shot off to the nearest Sainsbury's where i found a que in the ladies!

This is the first time i used a public loo since i was 15 when i had a lady banging on the door while i had an attack in town and calling all manor of names through the door and telling all the other ladies in the que how disgusting i was. So this was a real hard time for me!!

When i did finally get in the cubicle a new bunch of people came in and i just had to sit there holding it till they all went.

I don't know how i managed it, but i got to "go" in peace after an agonising 10 mins of holding on.

For the women in the lot, who get rude people disturbing your toilet time, you can always shout back "I'm pregnant. Let me be sick in peace!" While too many people have no sympathy for people with bowel problems, most people are horrified to think that they have been accosting a poor, sick, pregnant woman. Make a few gagging sounds for good effect, lol.

I am a new member and I have had IBS for 20 years now.  I also have had this humiliating thing happen to me.  Luckily I was on my way home and the only one in my car so no one had to know.  Even at work when I feel an attack coming on I try my hardest to not go to the bathroom because I know once I get in there it will be a bad episode and they completely drain me physically so I try to avoid it at all costs.  I always have to know where the bathroom is when I am out.  I also don't do well with road trips,  eating out or eating at a friends house.  This has pretty much controlled my life for years and has gotten worse over the last 3 years since I had my 3rd child.

Maybe this is a symptom of something wose, but I CAN'T hold it. My coworkers hold it all day. My friends ask me how I can use a "public toilet" and I ask them how they can possibly hold it. If I tried to wait more than, maybe... 5 minutes. I'd be a smelly mess.

Oh boy... bad memories. I have bowel adhesions, so what happens is that the stool can't get through sometimes - but the bile can. No gas, no "gotta go" feeling, no warning whatsoever. Just the explosion. At least it hasn't happened in public yet. So far, I've been in so much pain and usually vomiting beforehand, so I've been at home when this has happened.

The first time was actually pretty funny. I was sitting out by the pool trying to read myself into a distraction from the pain, and DH is rattling around cleaning things up. Just as he walked by, I felt the er... warmth? Jumped up off the chaise lounge, flung the towel around my waist and flew into the bathroom chanting the mantra, "I did NOT just crape myself! I did NOT just...." Turns out, DH saw the flight to the house and heard what happened from the other side of the door. I don't know which was louder - his laughter or my hysterics. LOL!

Accidents happen to healthy folk too. A very good friend of ours, who has absolutely no shame about anything, was on his way to work one morning. Thought he had gas and got a little surprise. When he called his boss to tell him he would be late, he said, "Gotta go back to the house and change clothes. I just **** my pants. Later!" I always picture the Boss's face. What's he going to say? "NO?" ROFL! :-D

Bad memories for me too...this has happened to me so many times I've lost count. I can not tell you how many times I was on my way to work (15 min drive) and had to turn around and go home to clean up and shower. It's something I continue to fear even tho it hasn't happened in a while. I HATE to be in a car for more than 15 minutes at a time and I don't eat before going somewhere because I can't "hold it" either. I have not ridden in a car with anyone but my hubby in a VERY long time. I always scope out the restroom as soon as I enter a store. I wonder when it won't be like that anymore.

I like the idea of having clean up pack, will have to get one together.

The reason for my bowel problems was Celiac disease (aka gluten sensitivity) and currently Lupus. They discovered Celiac first (9/03) and when I continued to have diarrhea every single day first thing in the morning after going on a gluten free diet my rheumy dx me with lupus and said it attacks my GI tract. Doctors started out telling me that I had IBS but I knew it wasn't.

thank heaven for Depends or i'd be stuck at home all the time.I always carry extra & baby wipes.
I had this problem for 10 yrs & was finally DX recently.What a reliefe.I'm on Pamine & i'm doing great now.

I agree with Dansky.  I have a dear friend who got stuck in traffic and then had the horrific experience of having massive D in a parking lot.  there was another couple travelling with them and they were less than sympathetic.  I no longer speak to them (the unsympathetic couple that is) even though it wasn't my accident.  anyway, she calls it a **** kit.  So, like Dansky, she carries that everywhere (complete with disposable camping toilet paper and the works) and it has eased her anxiety and it has eased mine as well.  I think we've all "not made it" in one way or another. It totally sucks.  No doubt.  As far as the one bathroom thing, I hate that myself.  My longtime bf and I are looking to buy a home or condo and I INSIST on 1.5 bathrooms at least.  Even if I'm feeling good, if there is only one bathroom, I immediately begin perseverating on that one fact.  My mom, on the other hand, has colitis and very little anxiety about it. She doesn't care how many people are waiting in line!  If she's having D, she'll be out when she's good and done, thank you!!  :)   God bless her.  I wish I could adapt more of that attitude.  Have a good night.   BTW- Dansky, I LOVE that saying you sport under your entries- 'Try Flying lessons. . . ' hahaha.  That's just great!!- it makes me smile each time I see it.

Yes it seems like most of us with IBS have a story or two to tell about misses and near misses. I know for sure if anyone needs to know where a toilet is around my area, i'm the one to ask.

Had some problems with this in the late afternoon yesterday.  I got my monthly girl thing and then I got stuck in traffic on the way home.  Those cramps, along with my road rage almost did me in.  I ended up driving illegally in the carpool lane just to rush home as fast as possible.  nono    Thank goodness I didn't get pulled over.  I probably wouldn't have made it home in time.

Yes I have always wanted to make a bumper sticker that reads

"Need a toilet? ... ask someone with IBS"

In my town I have printed off a complete map of where all the public toilets are around the city. I know where they all are and from any point in town I can get to a public toilet within minutes. I do realise that many cities would not have such a map, i am lucky

Good thing I got a good sense of humor.
The first time it happened, I was sitting in my robe on the phone and my ex was watching TV. I sneezed and crapped my robe. I said here, Ken wants to talk to you. My ex laughed his head off and TOLD them I crapped myself.
Why did it take me 12 years to divorce him anyway???????
Oh that's right, revenge, I wanted to scorch his nose hairs out first!
