I went to doc for the 3rd time this week & he believes what is making me so sick is I have a bad strep infection. My throat is not sore but it is inflamed & has pus pockets. I have been doing this since I became sick a year ago. I begged them to check me for strep a year ago but old doc would just say it's not strep & look at me like I was ignorant. Could someone carry strep that long ??

I guess it would be possible but it makes you really ill and that would mean that you have possibly passed it on to everyone that you had close contact with since strep is extremely contagious. Did anyone close to you have strep in the past year?

There are a couple different types of streptococcal infections, so they should really do a throat culture on you, not just a rapid strep test, which only tests for type A.  You could be getting recurrent infections, perhaps - although I kind of doubt it.  Have you been treated with antibiotics for this in the past year?

I have been sick off & on for the last yr. My throat swells up & gets real nasty looking & then in a couple of days its normal. also when my throat swells up that is when I have trouble with my ibs &all my other aches & pains. I rarely have sore throat. My doc ran a swab over my throat & it came back positive. He says I have massive case of strep. The strange thing is my throat is not sore. Everytime I've turned around in the last yr my kids have strep. I begged doc's to test me for strep from the get go & they refused. I also tried to get them to give me anti-b's & they wouldn't. I finally moved & went to new doc's & when I would get sick they give me anti-b's I will get to feeling well & then within a couple of weeks I'm sick again. My doc seems to think I'm not getting it wiped out of me & that I'm possibly a carrier. Doe'sthis sound possible?? I would gladly give them my tonsiles if I could feel better!!

Oh, one more strange thing is I have this rash on my chest. Last week it got so bad they sent me to derm & she was clueless so she has done biopsy. hopefully that will tell something.

If they didn't give you the correct AB's for strep, you won't get better. If you don't get them for long enough (like 2 weeks) you won't be cured either. They should give you a minimum of 2 wks of AB's and then retest you.

One of the prime clues to strep is a sandpaper-like rash on your chest.

I understand your frustration. I had a really bad strep infection years ago and was dealing with a civilian Dr at an air force base in England. He thought it was just a sore throat as my tonsils weren't involved. Duh! I don't have my tonsils anymore! I convinced him to do a test and it turned up positive. The nurse begged me to come back in and get AB's since it was so bad. You're lucky your throat doesn't hurt you. When I had it, it felt like I was trying to swallow a golf ball all the time.

Strep can also travel to your heart and give you rhumatic fever. Not something to mess around with!!!

I don't know, just make sure when taking antibiotics you take a good probiotic at least 2hrs AFTER taking the antibiotic, because antibiotics kill everything and leave your system vulnerable...as an IBSer you should be taking a good probiotic regardless everyday, IBSers are prone to bacterial overgrowth.

He gave me penicilln 4x's for 10 days then 1x day for 2 wks. Thanks pb4 I was wondering about probiotics . Snowy lynne this is a new doc, he is the only one who seems to be looking into my problems. I wouldn't trade him for nothing!

If you've had strep for a year and haven't been treated for it at all, you should consider yourself lucky if you haven't gotten rheumatic fever/rheumatic heart disease. An unchecked strep infection is not something to be lax about - I would reconsider my choice of doctor if I were you.

Or a change in antibiotics.  They were treating you with penicillin?  It's the oldest antibiotic out there and practically everything is resistant to it, especially strep!  They should try Zithromax or something...a good course of that should knock it out!

My GP always gave me amoxil when I had strep throat.

You could be a carrier but that should show up in swab.

This is my new doc that has found out that I have strep. I have been through dozens of docs who refused to test me for strep, which I never understood because it is a simple test. Whatever is wrong with me hit me like a ton of bricks in 2006. I was having severe cramps ibs, couldn't eat, light headedness, blurry vision, body hurt so bad I wanted to go to bed & never get up, gerd. nightsweats.The list could go on & on. I became so ill I moved in with mother. I was put on z_pac & given steroid shot & the rash on my chest got worse, by the next day it looked like someone had threw acid down my chest ( no blisters ) the doc then thought it could be shingles. He sent me to derm & she has done biopsy. Within 3 daysof coming off z-pac my throat swelled up. So I went back & that is when he discovered it was strep. I hope I get biopsy results this week. I do have to go back & be retested in 3wks. I am starting to feel better just after 2 days of anti-b's. Could this be what has been wrong with me for the last yr.It is just odd, I take anti-b's & feel fine for a wk or so & then boom I feel like crap!

My step sister kept getting strep throat every year, so they finally took her tonsils out, hoping that would help her to keep from getting it again. Something you migh consider if you still have yours and you know you can carry it for long periods of time.

When my daughter was little, she kept getting re-occuring strep throat as well, we had her tonsils and adnoides removed, she hasn't had strep throat since and this was 10 yrs ago now, she was in grade 2 at the time....so it's definitely something you should consider because strep can be very dangerous.
