I have had Hydronephrosis in my right kidney for a few years although I do not know what caused it.  I do not seem to have kidney stones.  I have occassional quick stabbing pain which goes away quickly and occassional low ache which can last about an hour.  My father is 79 and has  had polycystic kidney desease fore quite a while but says that it has never caused him any trouble.  He has had high blood pressure for at least 20 years or  more.  Dad will be seeing a Nephrologist in a few weeks for analysis of chronic kidney desease.  I see a urologist who does a yearly check (although it has been two years since he did a urine test or blood tests).  My question is should I be seeing a Nephrologist?

Yes you should be seeing a Nephrologist. At least to be watched by annual physicals. My mothers PKD never bothered her one day of her life. But mine gives me so much grief with the pain. Up until two years ago there was NO sign of this disease then one day on a routine xray they showed up and flourished fromt there on. It also started showing when my BP began to rise.

I have to run off to work but will come back after the dreaded 12 hours...

Hey StrongLady! Wanted to Welcome you to the Kidney Forum! I agree with Laurie, you probably should be seeing a nephrologist! Maybe you can get your primary doc to refer you to one.

Thanks for the info. I don't have to get a referral because I have a PPO health plan. My dad is seeing a nephrologist in September. I think I wait to see how he likes her and then make a decision about seeing the same one or looking into it myself. In the meantime I have another appt with the urologist.

I have found out when dealing with doctors you have to take the lead with them. I believe we are the only ones in control of our destiny. Hopefully you can get yourself followed by a good doctor. I'm glad your dad is seeing one.
