I know where to come for the best info online. I have frequented the hepatitis forum because of my now deceased Brother. My Mother-in Law has been feeling quite down, tired, and retaining fluids. Her breathing is effected due to the fluid in her midsection.

She lives in upstate N.Y. ( we are in Tn.) so I only get what she shares with her son (my Husband) and myself via the phone. Her visit with the doctor has her scheduled for a kidney biopsy this coming Monday. Her doctor wants her in the hospital today to get a jump on the biopsy and get her recovering.

She is waiting on her daughter to stay with her husband. He is on dialysis and had to have his leg amputated up to the knee a few months back. Unless someone will stay with him, she will wait until Monday for the biopsy.

She is taking a diuretic (I don't know which it is) to control the fluid. She told me her legs and feet are swollen as well. She said the doc told her she has Stage 3 Chronic Kidney disease. Can he tell this without a biopsy.

What will the biopsy tell other than the stage. What will he be looking for. Is the biopsy needed to plan a treatment for helping her to deal with Kidney disease. Many questions.

Any information you can share will be most appreciated. She has been feeling badly for quite a while. Her thyroid was over or under active so they are treating her for that but since her health was still declining another visit has brought about the kidneys issues.

The biopsy will help determine if the kidney disease is caused by some disease process, such as cancer. It will also rule that out and tell him how diseased the kidneys are and give him an idea as to the degree of function if any. How healthy the tissue is? Is blood supply hindered?

I suspect he may be checking to see if the kidney is functional at all with the degree of retention.

If at all possible going to the hospital earlier would give them lots of important information to aid in diagnosis. Monitoring those fluid levels and urinary outputs can tell them a lot plus anytime fluid is retained in close proximity to the heart and lungs it can turn to an emergency quickly.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful but given your lack of information and getting it second hand that's a broad overview.

Thanks Vickie, Your reply is helpful and so appreciated. It is hard to get the full details. She is stubborn as her son :). She says she will wait until Monday. I hope she doesn't have any emergencies until then. Or just maybe her daughter will help her out so she can go to the hospital.

It is a hard situation living so far apart. She hasn't given us all the info for fear of worrying us. My husband is battling Stage 4 Colorectal Cancer and currently this is a chemo week. So travel is excluded and info from her as well.

I have read that Chronic Kidney disease is treatable and she is a healthy person up until this. I know it has taken much out of her and hope they treat this soon. She has worn herself down worrying about her son and tending to her husband.

Your most welcome and thank you for explaining a bit more! Prayers to you all as your plate is certainly full. Hoping your husband has success with his chemo.

It's very difficult to be miles away from family when your battling your own health issues. I have a daughter in Texas who had a ruptured ectopic pregnancy a few years back and I was 1000 miles away 3 days post op from my 5 knee surgery and couldn't go. I've never spent such a anxiety filled day waiting for information to come.

Yes kidney disease can be treated and actually the loss of one kidney isn't bothersome anymore. With meds and dietary changes people do rather well.

Take care of yourself in there somewhere and please do keep me updated when you can.

As Vickie said, kidney disease is very treatable. My neighbor was born with only 1 kidney and has had cancer in his kidney. they removed the cancer and has been doing very well for over 4 years.
So sorry to hear of your husbands disease as well. Prayers to you and all your family.

Many Prayers are needed. She completed her pre-op yesterday and is hanging in there. The swelling hasn't gone down much in her legs or abdomen. It is seeping through her pores on her legs. Hope next week shows much relief and a better outcome for her. Aldactone hasn't shown much progress yet.

Husband is hanging in. Dose 1 of chemo treated him very badly because he hadn't hydrated himself enough. Dose 2 was better with much hydration and a jump start on nausea meds. 2 more doses over the next 5 weeks and then scan time for results of the meds.

Many Prayers needed for them both. It is awesome how the medical field has progressed over so many years. Unfortunately the meds that have to be taken are so risky.

Good to hear the news of your neighbor. Hope it continues for him. My MIL has always been a walker and a swimmer at her local civic gathering. After her husbands amputation she has neglected herself. Hoping things will get back in order for her.
Looking forward to her results in the late week next week. I will be sure to let you all know!!

I have had Crohn's for 36 years. Now my kidney's are failing. 31% function in left kidney and 69% function in right kidney. Doctor doesn't seem to be to worried but I am. When I had to have a perm. illostomy after the operation I was told my bladder didn't wake up. So I do not have any sensation to peepee. Now I am lead to believe that the doctor clipped my nerve while operating. Like I needed another problam. confused What should I do now? Urlogist said to come see him in a year and make sure I void everytime I empty my ostomy.

Wish I had of an update tonight for you all. My M-I-L is in the hospital tonight and expected to stay until tomorrow. All I can share for now is she has a severe kidney infection.

Her results came back and then the doc called her and had her admitted to the hospital this afternoon. He had put her on potassium and her diuretic. She felt worse this morning waiting on their call because she hadn't taken her potassium last night. Hopefully I can gain more info tomorrow to update you all and even us.
