8 mm kidney stone in kidney. Should I go to a urologist

I've been having right upper quadrant pain as well as occasional lower right abdomen pain. They thought it was my gallbladder but after numerous tests and scans my gallbladder is fine. I do have cysts on my liver as well as one on my kidney but was told those were normal and nothing to worry about. I do have other symptoms (pain and pressure in tailbone) but we think it is related to my SI joints.

They found an 8 mm kidney stone in my kidney. I was told that since it is in my kidney that it wouldn't cause any pain. I expressed concern about it causing pain if it moves out of the kidney. My primary care doctor told me that it could easily pass. She said that it was quite small. I told her that my husband has a 3 mm stone and was in a lot of pain. She said that I must be confused and that his stone must have been 3 cm not mm. I was shocked by this as I'm pretty sure that would be a huge stone. She said that I could pass a stone up to 2 cm. She said I would probably not even notice when I passed the stone and if anything it would just cause a little pressure. I know someone who just passed a 7 mm stone and was in horrible pain. I'm thinking that my doctor gave me the wrong information.

I'm thinking about seeing a urologist for a 2nd opinion but wanted to know if it would be a waste of time. Can they do anything for a stone in the kidney and is 8 mm something to be reasonably concerned about?

Thanks. I actually decided to go to a specialist and I'm having it removed. The specialist said that my doctor was very wrong. No way I would pass a stone the size without pain and in fact anything over 5 you usually can't pass.
