Hey everyone, my name is Yessenia and I had a kidney and a liver transplant 9 months ago (:

I was wondering if 5 mg of prednisone daily will cause bad side effects?

Like, weight gain, moon face, insomnia, high glucose, high blood pressure, etc?

I will start taking 5 mg daily as of Monday.

For what condition is the prednisone being prescribed, I didn't see you mention this. How long does the dr want you to take it?

to suppress the immune system it is an anti rejection medication...

I think it will most likely be for life sad but I think 5 mg is a low dose and I should not have the horrible side effects people complain about

That is a very low dose so you may end up with no side effects to very few. Usually the higher doses are the ones that cause the issues you listed. I was on a high dose for quite a long time & suffered through many side effects. Once off of it things returned to normal. Are you saying the dr is just now starting you on prednisone? If so, why so late? I understand the anti-rejection part but usually the medication is started right after surgery. An example, when my husband had a pacemaker put in, he was put on medication the same evening after surgery & had to stay on it for a year. I understand each procedure has a different protocol too. If you are diabetic even 5mg will affect your sugar levels & you will have to really keep an eye on it. Weight gain is because it causes water retention.

before I had my transplant I was treated with higher doses of steroids IV. I did have weight gain water retention and moon face during that time. I think it's true what you say, the higher the dose the more you end up with the side effects. I think 5 mg is safe. I also received IVIG and plasma to treat high antibodies before transplant. My antibodies went up again, so this is going to be a lifetime dose. I am aslo receiving IVIG at home now. I get pre medicated with 40 mg Prednisone before but I only receive IVIG twice a month. I don't gain weight or anything. I also have hyperthyroidism, which means I have a fast metabolism. I doubt I will gain any weight with Prednisone but I do want to gain some weight because I am looking too thin now. I just don't want the "moon face".

My concern with Prednisone isn't the weight gain and isn't the moon face. It's the fact that steroids eat up connective tissue. As a result, steroids can cause osteoporosis, cataracts, ... But 5 mgs is a low dose. I've been on much higher than that.

I have osteopenia from having been on high dosages of Prednisone for a severe ulcerative colitis flareup.

I think you need to also look into what could happen if you weren't on Prednisone.
