How do you know if a kidney stone has passed?

Hi All,

so my partner had to go to the ER yesterday because of very bad pain in his back. At the hospital they did a CT scan and found a 4mm kidney stone. His pain is better today and i was wondering how will he know when he has passed the stone?

Hi GB, what was the recommendations by the ER dr at dismissal? I suggest getting a copy of the CT & ask to be referred to a kidney specialist. If your partner passes the stone, believe me both of you will know immediately. It's pain that most humans have never experienced. The pain was so bad when I passed one that I passed out & fell off of the toilet. Keep in mind a stone can be the size of a grain of sand.

I'm currently going through this. Did they give him a straining device and tell him to strain his urine? I have to follow up with a urologist next week. It can take weeks, or more, to actually pass the stone. I was giving a prescription called Flomax to relax the bladder to help with the passing of the stone. And as Susie says they can be very tiny and still cause a lot of pain. I would look over his release instructions.

I’m in hospital now. Had a 1 inch stone removed thru surgery last Friday in my left kidney. Monday night got a stone in my right kidney that Dr thought would pass but it hasn’t. So another surgery tonight. Not easy. Pain is horrible
