Rash Treatment?

Hello...

I asked my rheumy about what I can do for my rashes and he said to use OTC cortaid.  I've tried it but it doesn't do anything for me.  Some of the larger rashes are starting to scar and sometimes I get this patchy discoloration thats permanent.   I was wondering what everyone else uses or if its important to have dermatologist when you have lupus?  Thanks in advance. :-)

I usually have that kind of thing checked by the expert in the field -- in this case, the dermo. I wouldn't let the rheumy treat me if I cut off my finger, I'd look for the surgical re-attachment specialist. I think of skin as the same sort of situation... Even if no prescript ion will help, a dermy have a lot more alternatives for you to try than the rheumy will know about .

Yeah your right, I guess I was trying to avoid yet another doctor....wouldn't it be nice if the lupus doc could treat every aspect of lupus it would save everyone alot of effort :)

Hi Catzz, I have used aveeno soap. Which isn't really soap but it's a bar that looks like so with oatmeal in it. I'm not saying it will work for you but it worked for me in 2 days. I bought it at walmart for about 4 bucks.

I'm new here and wonder what type of rash are you meaning...the one you get on your face? or other rash red scaly type...all over the body at different times?

Hi, quack welcome to the group

I get a wide variety of rashes....I was talking about the face rash and the red scaly patchy rashes I get on my upper body, I also get the disk shape ones that scar and lastly the simple itcy red dot ones, my doc told me to use cortaid on all of them but now i guess i'm looking for a dermatologist. :-)

I asked my Dr why my face looked red alot of the time, everyday, but not 24/7.. I gave red cheeks, nose, chin, and above my brows...I get it alot after a shower or bath too. He said it's rocesea? Adult acne...I don't have pimples? I don't know...I'm just so frustrated with the med system right now...
I also get round red rash, (about the size of a dime or nickle) starts out red then goes scaley, the leave a brown or grey spot on my skin. I get them all over the place...not all at once. a couple on my legs or face, hands, face, neck, feet, not on my arms yet..

Hi Quack, Rocesea responds to antibiotic treatment. Most docs can't tell the difference between some rocesea and a lupus rash. A derm can help you there too. The discoid lesions should be easy to biopsy and should be treated by a derm also who can prescribe a stronger cortizone treatment (cream or injections). Because those scar, it would be a huge advantage to add a derm to the mix of doctors. But I would still have a rheumy for the aches and pains and organ issues. Blessings!

My rashes get aggravated by a shower or bath...even if it's only warm water.  They get blood red and stay that way for hours.  Does this happen to anyone else?

If your skin is very sensitive, and mine is, bathing can cause irritation which results in already aggrivated areas looking much worse. All I can say is find a dermy fast cause you need to control the scarring or else if/when it moves to the scalp you will have bald patches.

Hello

You could ask about adding another anti malarial called Quinacrine to the Plaquenil. It's slightly different from Plaquenil and the two work very well together for general disease modification, and skin joints and fatigue- Quinacrine is especially known for its energising effects. Quinacrine has to be obtained from a compounding pharmacist who will make the product up into pills or gel capsules.
It does not affect the eyes at all so the combination is a good way of getting extra anti malarial power without going beyond the maximum recommended dose of Plaquenil and may mean less Prednisone or other DMARDs like Methotrexate or Imuran
There should be obvious improvement within a few weeks

I haven't posted in a while to much going on.I  have the butterfly rash it is scared I was diagnose to late they thought I had broken blood vessel on my face the Derm.  started lasering my face boy did that hurt, went to another Derm. he  said it was acne roascea sorry about the spelling. Went to one of the university hospital and saw lupus RA. best thing that could have happen to me.  That was twenty yrs ago. Couples weeks ago I was diagnose with dermatomysitis connective tissure disorder the derm. put me on Quinacrine 100mg, Elidel cream. It seems to be working I'm still on plaquenil400mg so Bee is right and about  Quinacrine see a good derm. Also have sle. many other problems.

I will look for a dermatologist for my rash now...thanks for all this info again...you guys are great with all this help..can you make an appt with a Dermotologist or does your Dr have to referre you to them?  thanks again

Hi !
I have the same rash and my Dr gives me a strong ointment that works very well , however, it makes a mark on your skin for about two days.
