Protein found in urine, is that bad?

I had new Lab wrk done, last 2 labs were good.  I guess if it was bad DR. would have called me already.  I looked on-line at my results.  Has anyone had protein in urine too, what happened next?

Hi Sunshine, Others know much more about this than me. But it might be helpful if you post other labs that were off. There is info in the urine and info in the blood (creatinine?) I don't know much about it . . . but the combo of information is what help figure things out. These labs will often be out of whack temporarily and then go back to normal. Those with big problems "usually" had whacko labs for a long time and it steadily got worse. Many have temporary issues and then things normalize and the doc just watches it. I hope this helps. Hi Sunshine, I am only speaking from my own personal experience. Depending on how high your level is your rheumy will keep an eye on your urine and kidney function blood test or they may want you to do a 24 hour urine test w/Creatinine Clearance (blood test). This will tell more of how your kidney's are functioning.

Don't worry... if it's bad the doctor should call you or refer you to a specialist. Take care and let us know how you are doing.

Hi Sunshine! Stacie is correct. When my protien is high, my rheumy does a 24 hour urine with a creatine clearance. My protien levels vary but my 24 hour unrine tests have always been OK. I have lots of kidney stones and I often have protien in my urine so my rheumy watches me very closely. Hopefully all of my current meds will keep things under control! I will keep you in my prayers!

I just had a test show protein in my urine so my doc ordered a re-test and it turns out my first lab test was contaminated. Sort of personal but the lab tech did not give me that little wipey to use beforehand and I skipped it with the first test. When it came back positive that is the first thing the doc asked me.. did you use the wipe? The second time I used 3. LOL.

My doc did say that with another positive test he would order the 24 hr test. Don't ever rely on a doctor's office to call you if it is serious. Sometimes the order sits with the nurse for days. Call the office and ask them to explain the results.

The condition is called proteinuria and should be treated.  This condition is common with lupus nephritis. Your kidneys normally do not filter out the larger protein molecules but when they are attacked and damaged by your immune system sometimes they do.  The immediate symptom is edema in your feet, ankles and legs.  Your blood does not retain fluids as well and it seeps out into the surrounding tissue.

I had that condition and twice gained 15 lbs of water weight in just a few days.  My case was a class II one and there appeared to be little permanent damage to my kidneys.

If not treated you can damage your kidneys further and it is potentially a serious condition.  Normal treatment is with ace inhibitors like lisinopril and meds should do the job fairly quickly.

At the very least, the doc should have you come back in and do another urine test and if there is still protein there, a 24 hour urine test should be done. If that is high, then you should see a specialist about it. I've had high levels before and saw a nephrologist. Luckily, mine resolved once I started taking prednisone. Keep us posted on what you find out.
