I have problems off and on with a tight feeling in my throat.  It makes my voice hoarse and its uncomfortable to swallow.  I never know when and why this happens.  It can last days or weeks.  Now, I havea problem where food and drink will go down the wrong way and I will start choking like crazy.  I don't know if this has anything to do with lupus or not.  I was hoping you may know.

I don't know if it caused by Lupus either, but I do have the same problem. and after my last stay in the hospital I came home with the aggravating cough, that starts out as a cough and sometimes ends up as a sneeze. Also the food going down the wrong way often starts the coughing and then sneezing.

My mother was diabetic, and she had this same problem for awhile before she died. she had suffered a massive stroke, and could not cover her mouth when she started the sneezing part, and this caused her to cough food into other peoples plates. I wish I could have helped her with this. But I didn't know what to do. Now I have the same problem, but I can control the effects of the sneezing because I have control over both sides of my body.

I have problems swallowing sometimes and some foods I choke on more than others. I don't know if this helps or not but I find it's gotten worse these last few months and I didn't have this problem before I had Lupus. It's not foods you'd think either -- it's like apples, crackers, etc...

I have days where I find it difficult to swallow those are the days I just don't eat. The worst is trying to take a pharmacy of pills when nothing goes down quite right. I'm with ya!!

Domanique,

Your swallowing problem is called dysphagia.  It is common with lupus and other AI diseases and can usually be addressed with speech therapy.  Do not ignore it as it can become a serious problem to get proper nutrition and you can aspirate and get pneumonia.

Testing is usually done with a video swallow test where you swallow different types of food and luquids of different consistentcy while being xrayed.  This gives the speech pathologist a picture of your actual swallowing which can be diagnosed.

I could not swallow anything, not even my own saliva, but speech therapy restored my swallowing and allowed me to get my feeding tube pulled after several months.

Talk to your doctor about it and insist on getting tested.

Hi hun, so glad your appt got moved up. Hopfully you will get some answers soon. Choking is a scarey feeling. I lived alone quite a bit and I have really feared that I would choke to death by myself.
