Ok, this is similar to Ginny's post, but not quite the same thing. Not only do I get dry, chapped lips, but I have a real hard time with cold sores on my lips. Especially this time of year for some reason, and especially when I start to get rundown, tired, or sick. I found a long time ago that campho-phenique worked about the best for me, but I must be getting immune to it or something. It seems to take forever for those darn things to clear up now! Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

I wish I had some advice for you on the cold sore issue.  I don't get those.  I'm sure someone will come along with some good ideas for you!

I think lynnwood gets something from her doctor for that. Hopefully she will see this and that I'm right about who it is. I think taking all the meds to control the immune system is what is causing the problem. I think everyone has a tendency to get the coldsores but our immune system keeps it in check. Well you know that's the people who have a normal immune system. I just looked at her meds and she takes Valtrex. you might discuss it with your doctor.

Haha. Yeah, I take Valtrex to control fever blisters -- did that long before lupus arrived -- they are a result of a herpes virus, just a different strain than genital herpes. Fever blisters (if you've inherited or contracted the virus) are usually triggered by stress or fever...like even the mild increase in body temperature from being in the sun 2 hours used to trigger mine. When I got lupus, they were triggered more often as when the immune system is doing strange things we end up with minor fevers (so minor we don't notice them) all the time. Valtrex is a popular prescript ion preventative... That being said, there are some new items on the market that are supposed to help them heal faster - I've not tried the new stuff, but found "Blistex" to work the best for me. One big secret is to keep the sores moist and don't let them dry out...that keeps them from getting dry, cracking, and getting deeper. Good luck with them...

Denovir is a prescription med for cold sores.  Comes in a little tiny tube, but lasts a long time cuz you only need a little.  My doc Rxed it years ago - and it works really well.  There may be newer OTC things out - or even Rx meds - but my husband and I have both used it and found it to be the best thing ever.

P.S.  I do a lot more thinking about ice cream than drag queens - I was totally thinking Dairy Queen!

I use Zovirax cream. Sometimes though the blisters do not go away. especially when I am on prednisone. if the zovirax doesn't start working in a day or 2, or I notice an itching and spreading, I switch to bactroban (antibiotic cream) so appearently I have the virus and a tendency to get a bacterial infection. when I was a kid I got impetigo under my chin and ever since then any pimple there would turn into that.

Thanks guys! I went to my doc yesterday and he prescribed me zovirax. Haven't tried it yet because I have to get the rx filled. So will we see! Thanks for all the advice!
