Hi, I'm from the Crohn's forum but was recently diagnosed with Lupus Anticoagulant.  I know that many people with Lupus also have LAC.  All I know about the condition is what my pharmacist could tell me and what I read off of the internet.  I'm especially interested in LAC and pregnancy, but any information would be helpful.

Hi Lavender, Sorry you are dealing with another issue.   Chron's is bad enough without adding more issues.  I think some medications can cause some of the positive bloods.   You might ask you doctor about that possibility. I don't know a lot about the anticardiolipin/antiphospholipid/lupus anticoagulant issues, but I found this article that might be helpful. Is your doctor thinning your blood?   and checking it regularly?  That would be really important.  Sometimes, just an aspirin can keep the blood thinned out properly.  Sometimes it takes rx blood thinners.   Ginny knows lots about this, because she is one of many here who also have thick, sticky blood from lupus. Hi Lavender,

 

It's really smart of you to be asking questions about Lupus anticoagulant. I noticed in your signature that you are taking Warfarin.  That's good!  Daily aspirin usually isn't enough to thin the blood for us. I was on a daily aspirin, but ended up having a stroke at 28.  I'm on Warfarin now.

 

I have 2 antibodies that cause my sticky blood disorder.  The anticardiolipin antibody and the antiphospholipid antibody. Double whammy.

 

Pregnancy is certainly possible with these disorders, but the risk of miscarriage is very high.  about 75% of women with the antibodies will have multiple miscarriages and many won't ever be able to carry a baby past the first trimester, even when they're on Warfarin or Heparin. The issue is that the blood is too thick and doesn't reach the placenta in amounts required to sustain the child.  A lot of women don't even realize they're pregnant and will miscarry before their next period is due.

 

Of all the issues I have with Lupus. My APS (antiphopholipid syndrome) is the most serious. It's not to be taken lightly at all.  I'm really glad you are investigating this more.  It's really important to know the risks.  How often are you getting your INR tested?  Are you doing well at keeping a theraputic amount of Warfarin in your blood?  If you have any questions at all about this, please let me know.  I'm more than happy to share anything I can!

Yes, I'm on Warfarin. My INR is checked every two weeks at this point because it has been difficult to stablize it. My Pharmacist and I went through my LAC tests last time I was in to see her. It looks like I've been tested and retested many times, all which came out positive. I was told that I have LAC APS. They started testing me after I developed a PE. I have an appointment with a hematologist in 3 weeks. I'm hoping he can tell me more. I'll have to think of some questions now that I know there are a few people on here that can give some advise. Thanks so much for the advise already given.
