Okay, just a little curious.  If a person has lupus...such as I have SLE...are you able to donate blood??  There is a local blood drive going on which sparked the question.  I have never donated blood anyways.  In my mind i'm thinking it probably wouldn't be a good idea for myself.  But just didn't know if you could.  So I thought I would ask to try and find out.  Thx.

Hi there, I did a quick search and found the following information on a donate blood website: http://www.donateblood.com.au/page.aspx?IDDataTreeMenu=88 "Systemic lupus erythematosus - I have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can I donate? You are not eligible to donate if you have SLE because it affects your fitness to tolerate regular blood donation. It is also possible that regular blood donations could affect the severity of chronic inflammatory conditions such as SLE. Blessings!

Ha! Rosie's post happened to reference the Australian Red Cross -- In America, you are allowed to donate but it is strongly recommended that you do NOT do so if you are flaring or having undetermined issues. They also are not too fond of the idea of you are taking prednisone or a chemotherapy med (MTX, Cellcept...) But if you feel good and aren't taking those meds -- the more blood the merrier!!!

Hi all, yes Lynnwood is correct. This is a subject dear to my heart since I will be getting donations if I get listed. People can give blood with lupus but each center is different so they recommend that you check with your local blood bank first. More inportant then that before you ever do anything you need to check with your doctor!. While it may be alright and you may feel ok if your anemia is not under control you need to wait until it is.
