I broke my humerus in June and had to have surgery. My bone is healing but not as fast as it should be. Has anyone broken bones? Is it normal with lupus to take this long to heal. I had a bone graft and where they did that cut still has not healed completely.

Spangle,
I've had three stress fractures on my right foot in the past few years. The first one was pre-prednisone, but the next two have been post prednisone which has caused or contributed to my having oste
openia. I don't know scientifically, but my doctors and I believe that the weakness in my bones is due to my having taken prednisone for 5 years.
I've decided that I need to eat a lot more cheese! Yummmmm. (giggles to herself)

Prednisone is used to control inflammation which is what causes our joints to hurt. I'm having trouble understanding how, with a lupus diagnosis, prednisone makes you hurt worse. Where does it make you hurt?

I get really bad pain in my legs. I know it does not make sense but it is one of the side effects of prednisone. The pain is so bad I can not walk. My body is very sensitive to medicine. It also gives me a bad migraine headaches. I am just a weirdo.

Spangie,
I see that you've been diagnosed with both lupus and fibromyalgia. Prednisone helps the inflammation from Lupus. Prednisone is well-know for making fibromyalgia worse.
I suspect the pain you are feeling, since it gets worse with prednisone, is actually your fibromyalgia acting up, not your lupus.
You might want to pop over the the HW Fibro Forum and check out the first thread, Fibro 101, to get some suggestions that might help you more.
Good luck,

Thank you !!!!! LYNNWOOD,
I have Lupus and I've taken My dear friend and enemy at the same time PREDNISONE
and I never got that reaction I do understand every one is diff. but for Lupus it's just mainly
used for inflammation. for a minute there I was confused, This med can be your enemy if taken for to long . I'm 42 and already i had cataracts removed from both my eyes . also my dos. at one point was so high I went into a Prednisone psychosis, never pain while on the med. it's self
I also have Pericarditis, also Arthritis, I get seizures ,plus I have Pleurisy, at times it just hurts to take deep breath, i get very bad headaches and at time for no reason I start to vomit. That i still can't understand why the vomiting at times. but the rest I try to live day by day I leave it all in my Lords loving hands.
Like i was saying thank you Lynnwood , I feel you hit the button with our friend Spangie
for a minute she had me confused I think you were more observant to what she wrote i missed her other condition and that just might be the pain she feels
(Spangie I only wish you the best trust in the Lord Our illness is not an easy one ! We who are in the Lupie club know all to well what it is to live in pain day and night.

Thank you for your suggestions. But does anyone if it affects the healing of bones? I just do not understand why is taking so long. Where they took the bone graft has not healed. It is infected. I am going back to the hospital tomorrow for them to look at it. I had my surgery on July 6th.

I don't know Spangle, but have you had a bone density test? If your bones are thinning that will affect how quickly your bones heal. The stress fracture that I have now is hurting worse today than it has since it was first fracture, about
six weeks ago. It's painful, frustrating, and a bit concerning. My doctor just told me to stay off of it. It's not in a cast, but a big black boot. they want me to start using a cane or a cart at the grocery store.
I feel your pain, but can't tell you what is causing your bones to heal slowly. Let me know if you find out.
Pat
