What do you take for pain?

I have a appt with a new rheumy on Tuesday and was wondering what most of you take for pain? I can't take NSAIDs because I also have IBD. Tylenol doesn't work and the plaquenil has not kicked in yet. I found 1 loritab in the house today and took 1/2. Do many of you have to take this type of pain medicine on a daily basis? At least it worked and I am out of pain for the first time in weeks. I've read that a lot of doctors don't give this type of pain medicine. I don't know what I am supposed to do if I can't take aleve, motrin, aspirin etc........ I am allergic to celebrex-:)

When the pain gets bad, I take a darvocet. I cannot take any aspirin products, nsaids, ibuprofin, either. I will take the Tylenol for smaller amounts of pain, but sometimes my DH looks at me and says you need a darvocet. He's usually correct. Feel better!

I started with Ultram for my hips, but I am now taking Vicodin when it's bad.

All the rheumatologist here wanted to give me was prednisone and plaquenil for pain-:) Of course the prednisone helps but I got so depressed with it. I hope the new rheumy prescribes something besides prednisone. I also hope he works up the positive ANA.

Neither plaquenil or prednisone are pain medications. 

My PCP prescribes Tramadol for occasional use.  I get 30 for 2 months-probably if I wanted more then that I would need to ask my rhuematologist to take over writing the scripts but I don't use all of them so for now we are all happy with this arrangement.

I use pain patches, vicodin, and tramadol for pain. I have spinal issues too though and my pain is extreme. I have heard of people on this board using something called voterin (sp) gel that helps with pain. it works like an nsaid but doesn't affect the digestive tract and those who have used it are very happy with it. I wish you luck.

To be honest, the pain caused from lupus in my case does not respond to oral pain medication. I have tried tramadol (2 pills 3 x's a day) did nothing, darvacet was like candy, and hydrocodone took the edge off of the pain but not to the point where I wanted to keep taking it because it made me to sleepy to do anything except sleep! Keeping warm clothes on helps the most but last week I had a rhuemy apt and she suggested me trying voltaren gel as red rose suggested and it works so good. Doesnt take the pain away all the way but it makes things a lot easier. It is a nsaid but does not have the side effects that nsaids have and it comes highly recommended. You can get a free sample from your rhuemy to see if you are interested in getting a Rx for it. It comes in a tube a bit smaller than toothpaste and lasts a pretty good amount of time. I even let a friend try it because she has really bad neck pain and her pain was gone for a few hours! I would deffinatly recommend it and I have never EVER used any gel that works like this. And a plus is it smells for about 10 to 15 minutes but then the smell is gone!!!

Hey Jeanneac,

So sorry that you are in that much discomfort.  From day one, my rhuemy gave me a script for darvocet and has no problem with letting me use it daily if needed.  It is a godsend on those days that the pain is elevated.  Many times I will cut it in half just to take the edge off.  I also use the voltaren gel, it helps but it doesn't last like the darvocet does.  The gel is great for a quick fix and to help with the inflammation of the joints.  I hope you find something that works.  I truly believe that we do not have to suffer daily to have a better quality of life.  Good Luck!

I have my appt. tomorrow. Honestly, I feel so achy and tired. The plaquenil hasn't kicked in yet. I'll ask for that gel. Hopefully I can use that. I'd probably have to rub it all over my body though! LOL.... I am going to Mayo so I hope they give me a good work up b/c I feel like crapola and I don't want prednisone!!! I bet they hear that all day long. Thanks for the information and dialogue.
