Ever since I was diagnosed with SLE, I have had a problem with the whites of my eyes turning red - all the time. They do feel dry but not terrible - they just look terrible. I have had to give up wearing contact lenses and I now use daily eye drops but nothing seems to help. Does anyone have this problem and/or know how to control it?

Sorry to hear this, I personally have not had an issue with my eyes. I know that I was told to only use drops that are like our own tears, not to use anything else. I know this probably did not help. Hope it clears up for you.

hey there,
are your eyes red all the time? do they itch or burn or feel gritty? I would use a preservative free tear like genteal or theratears and there are many many more sometimes you have to find the right one for you! do NOT use any drop that "gets the red out" that just constricts the blood vessels and the second you stop using them it returns.

If you have any other problems get your eyes checked by an ophthamologist, if you have dryness issues they can help with drops, punctal occlusion, perscription drops.....there are many options.

The right drops are "lubricating" eye drops or gels. GenTeal or Tears Naturale come to mind.

Have exactly the same problem as you do, red sore, gritty, dry eyes. I find the best drops to use are the lubricating ones or  gels and use them as often as possible. Mine seem to last for a few days then settle down for a while but don't get lazy when you're eyes seem ok, it's a constant battle if you stop using the drops when the red is gone it'll be back in no time. Keep well

I have the exact same problem, and at first I thought it was because I started fallin asleep with my contacts in sometimes or a new mascara...but I think it may also be related to some of the medications - I'm just not sure which one - Plaquenil or the Medrol. It doesn't happen every day...but the genteal have really helped after I take my contacts out and rewetting drops when I have them in. I've heard of folks on restasis and using the previously mentioned eyedrops that keep them on the fridge door handle because it feels better when its cold, but I'd have to read the box to see if its safe or ask the doctor before doing that. Hope they're feeling ok!

I would ask my doctor to check you for sjogrens. I have it along with the sle, the run together alot. It causes me that problem with my eyes. That would be my guess. Hope you find some releif soon.
