Hey everyone!  I used to be a regular on here a few years ago and between moves, marriage, and kids things got hectic but now I am back!  My name is Marianne and used to go under the screen name Froggers.  I was diagnosed with SLE back in 2004 and have had my fair number of good and bad days with the addition of new conditions.  Since being on here, I got married and and have been with my wonderful husband 2 1/2 years, had a little boy who is 19 months, and have another little boy on the way.  Thankfully with my SLE, I managed to have a pretty good pregnancy with my first son and so far have had a pretty good pregnancy with the second one.  On top of my SLE I have mitral valve prolapse, Raynaud's syndrome, antiphospholipid syndrome which comes and goes, and an antithrombin III deficincy which comes and goes. 

I do have a question.  My husband and I have been going back and forth about me getting my tubes tied while I get my c-section done since doesn't want anymore kids and refuses to get a vasectomy.  I, on the otherhand, am very hesitant about it due to some issues I have had in the past with hormone inbalances and being advised not to take anything with estrogen due to my blood clotting issues (also have a genetic marker for blood clots).  I haven't talked to my rheumy about it yet or my fetal specialist since I really don't want one plus I would like another one.  I know there are some non estrogen forms of birth control (an IUD is not an option for me due to personal reasons) but trying to get it across to my husband that it's not fair to me to have to go through more extra stress due to my conditions.  Has anyone had their tubes tied with similar problems?

I'm recently back on the boards after a few years:)
I had my tubes tied 6 months ago. I had a hard time with the birth controls between flares and hemorrhaging, while "birth control shopping", so decided that I was ready to be done with them. I have had 3 pregnancies, two of which were aborted because I was so ill. The one that I kept nearly killed me as well, but I fought through it, and have a wonderful, strong little girl who will be 8 this year. She was very, very ill as a baby, and has a pacemaker for her heart block, as well as testing for juvenile RA.
After having my tubes tied, I bled lightly for 7 weeks, then clotted golf balls for two months. The doctor said that it wasn't due to the tubal litigation, rather the D&C. Now, my periods are back to normal, and get them every 5 weeks to the day. I'm happy with my choice, but it's not for everyone.
The incisions that I had were in the c-section scar, and a tiny inch long one on the bottom of my belly button.
Make sure you know what you want before doing it:)

Personally, I would get it done. It is the best "less stress" form of birth control there is. They aren't taking anything out so there is no hormone imbalance. And, they are going to do it while you are already open so there will be no seperate surgery. It shouldn't take them long to do it either, maybe about 15-20 minutes.

Deciding whether or not to have another baby is very personal. If you would like to have another and he doesn't, then I would say that he should volunteer to take that step.

I'm going through something similar to you except I have a copper IUD now. I've been having a lot of issues with possible endometriosis but my doctor (gyno) really wants to take the IUD out because 1) she wants to rule out that first and 2) if it is indeed endo, IUD and endo are not a good mix.

I talked to her about getting my tubes tied because with my neuro issues plus my migraines, none of my doctors want me on hormones and this would be my only b/c option as I can't do condoms either. Ok, well she does not want me to go under the knife at all. She is really discouraging me from a tubal ligation and she is pushing me to push my husband for a vasectomy :(

I have spoken with him about it and he basically turns pale each time and is really dead set against it. She says that a tubal is just too risky for me. Now I know different doctors are more conservative than others so I may be getting a second opinion but I was intrigued by your post seeing the similar issue.

Are you getting a c-section or are you delivering vaginal? I think its easier to get the tubal when you are having a baby correct? I really have no idea, just asking. My 'baby' is a teenager so its been a while for me.
