Malar rash...how long does it last?

Hi,

I am going thru the process of diag.  I have fibro. & carpal tunnel, and my other sym. are face rash/cheeks and nose, sun-sensitivity-burn and rash, all over muscle/joint pain, stiffness, headaches,etc. Have a very low + ANA screen 1:80 speckled, but so far neg. with mostly everything else (that was last years bloodwork) Doing another round in 2 weeks.  I am wondering how long a malar rash presents itself.  I took pic. for my rhueme. next week because it only lasted a few days...now is very light.  It does not hurt, only feels hot.  Can anyone give me some advice?

Malar rash can last as long as it wants to, I believe. I've had it from a few hours to a few weeks. Mine looks like sunburn, but I know others can get it more brown or more noticeable. Sometimes mine feels hot, and sometimes it sort of tingles, but it never hurts.

Same here. It varies on me too. It lasts longer if I'm outside too much.

I agree with the previous responses. Flushed cheeks that feel warm. Some say that I look the healthiest when I feel the worst. Good luck with diagnosis and treatment.

Does the rash get darker when you're really warm? I've had the lightly flushed cheek and nose thing for a while. It gets worse after I'm out and running around and also is very noticeable after I get out of the shower. I took a picture right after showering for the doctor because it was darker and easier to see the pattern. I also somethimes get it on one side of my forehead. Is this true for anyone else?

Yes, mine stands out more when I'm warm or hurrying around.

So does mine especially after a shower or even blow drying my hair and having the heat in my face. I've also gotten it on my chest and arms as well. It goes across my cheeks and nose and spares the creases right next to my nose. I've seen my ears get red too and heat/sun makes it all worse and not only is it warm/hot at times but also feels like it burns as well.

Do you get places that look like you clawed yourself and have a raised welt? I can just lightly scratch myself and have a raised welt that lasts for hours.

Yes I do Joy...in fact that happens at any time. If I were to scratch my skin now it would and it always has done that. Also, if the rash is touched when I have it it becomes more prominent and it actually looks and feels smoother than the rest of my skin as well as a little bit a shine when the light hits it at different angles. Guess this is due to the inflammation?

I have a co-worker who has it all the time, too. She has SLE like me. She says she's had it since she was diagnosed over 20 years ago. I just started having it about a month ago. So strange!

mine looks itchy ,red colored welts,burning ,painful and after they are gone leave marks behind sometimes .

very hot and warm over welts too .

I too can scratch myself into hives, especially when I exercise. The insides of my elbows, neck and torso can get inflamed but usually Aveeno or hydrocortizone cream can settle it quickly.

When I first started getting sick my rash would last about 2 days and seemed to attack my cheeks and nose only when I was sick with a virus or cold and would present itself toward the end of the illness. This is why doc thought I was allergic to so many antibiotics. Then it started appearing with joint pain, fatigue, and temp every couple months and lasted only a few days.

In the last 6 months it's been on my face more often than not (i hurt all over, all the time), now seems to spread up my forhead a lil. Doc gave me a strong steroids cream to use twice a day for 7 days this last time. It did nothing, so I went back to see him. That's when I finally got my dx. He looked back over my chart, called his rheumy friend, they decided 8 out of 10 characteristics was plenty (including 2 positive ANA's the last one of which was 1:3 hundred and something speckled), and made me an appomintment to start treatment. In the meantime, I'm taking prednisone, and It's slowly clearing up. It's been about 2 weeks since this one started...

My rash is bright red, raised, and warm. I also have isolated red and purple spots all over my arms and chest. Unfortunately those don't seem to leave. They sort of leave a scar...
