Itching all over?

Hi gang,

I experience what feels like itching or stinging pinpricks (all over, not just in legs or arms or whatever).  It's the worst when I go to bed.  It takes me 60-90 minutes at the least to fall asleep.

Do any of you have this?  What's this all about?

I see my rheumy soon and plan to ask him, but in the meanwhile I was curious!  Do you deal with this?

I think it's a type of neuropathy.
I will get horrible attacks of itching.
Sometimes hydrocordisone cream will help it stop.
Cold packs also help.
If it's really bad I take a benadryl to knock myself out.

Update: I saw my doc...turns out it was the plaquenil causing the kamikaze itching.  I've since discontinued and it is much improved.

Glad to hear you know what it was! I've gotten crazy itching for a long while and only just now started Plaquenil.

My itching is weird in that 95% of the time I don't. When I do, any pressure on my body (scratching, bumping into something, etc) results in raised hive-like shapes. Precisely like dermatographism pictures I see online but it's perplexing why this only happens when I feel extra lousy.

Making lemonade out of lemons... My kids love it! They really enjoy writing messages on me.

Wow, that is interesting! I love your comment about your kids writing messages on you. :-) Good for you for looking for the silver lining. A good attitude is half the fight with lupus, don't you think?


I started the plaquenil again this week, to see if I can learn to tolerate it RE: the itching. So far, so good. I've also been slathering on a ton of lotion, just to make sure winter dry skin isn't making it worse.

I get that weird hive thing too. I look like I'm clawing myself but I hadn't touched myself.
A friend I have says her rhuemy says it's allergies. I doubt it, but who knows....

I don't think it's allergies either. It only occasionally happens, and when nothing noteworthy is changing other than feeling extra tired and worn out. It'll hang around a few days then go away.

Any pressure against the skin will cause hives in that exact shape. Doubtful that I'm allergic to everything that pressurizes the skin. Look up dermatographism and it's a great match. Only confusing part is that folks with that condition normally have it all the time.

Yes I get this too all over, normally just before bed time, drives me crazy, I haven't found an answer to it yet, but i sure hope you do, I find if I meditate that it get were I can get to sleep faster, hard to put it out of your mind though.

Mine seems to be on my neck and under my chin the worst. I do have it on my right arm a little but my neck has taken a direct hit with this. I hope this isn't inappropriate but I was also bathing and when this sensitivity is in full swing it can look as tho I was just lashed in the shower, I am so having bad trouble in my vaginal area when washing as that skin has become so thin or sensitive or whatever it is that is going on and that is just super duper painful.

Well finally go into NAIMS clinic. They say I have developed fibromyalgia ontop of my lupus. I was told to continue my flexeril even with the night terrors. I cannot aford Cymbalta so they are checking for an alternative. I know Prozac doesnt work. Its made my blood pressure go way up. Now its winter and I have itching when ging to sleep at night.

I can't take Flexeril. It makes me sweat something terrible.
