Can you have Lupus with normal test results?

This is my first time posting on the Lupus boards. My question is, can you have Lupus and your test results are normal? I don't know what my ANA test results have been in the past but I know I have been tested. I guess I need to get copies of the results to see for myself. I have quite a bit of the symptoms but I also have RA, Sjogrens and Fibromyalgia. The reason I am questioning this is because I have the butterfly thing on my face. But, it doesn't appear to be a rash as it is not raised but flat. My face has been red like this for quite some time but I never thought too much about it until recently. Makeup doesn't cover it. It doesn't burn, hurt or itch. I do have a doctor apt in December and I will ask about it but was just curious. Surely, if my ANA had been suspicious, I would have been told by my doctor?

Blood tests neither prove nor disprove a Lupus diagnosis. You would need to have 4 of 11 symptoms to be diagnosed by a rheumotologist.

I have had lupus for a very long time.and my blood test come out normal almost all


the time. My lupus come and goes so depending on when they take your blood.
yet most of the time i am having a flare up and when they check your blood the
markers are all normal . and i know my body.don't laugh the top of my head
hurt so bad you couldn't touch the right side of my head to brush my hair was
brutal and i could not get it dyed. so when i went to the Rheumatology he gave me
a shot of steroids and pills it went away in about 2 weeks. i always feel like i am
crazy but really i am not. I am in the doctors office more than i am at work.

lupus osteoarthritis Fibromyalgia blood clots osteoporosis and a muted gene which makes my blood to thick or to thin . raynaud's hypothyroidism,depression and the lupus effects my teeth borderline glaucoma esophageal disorders and two many pills.

zimms - I don't think you are crazy. It's funny you said that about your head hurting. Mine gets that way sometimes to where even my hair hurts.

I am going through the same thing. Based on the criteria I have 5 of the 11 indicators and normal blood work (except for slightly elevated C reactive protein). (I am wondering if that and my sed rate would have been higher if I hadn't been taking large does of ibuprofen to fight the pain for several weeks.)  I just had my first rheumy appointment on Friday and she was pretty convinced it's lupus but I don't know if she will change her mind after seeing the blood work. That's always been my experience, once the blood tests say nothing the doctors tell me its all in my head :( 

 

I truly hope you are able to get some answers.  :)

Sharon-I am glad you don't think i am crazy . this flare lasted quit a while

before i went to see the rhemy, my regular doctor said it was a nerve that was pinched in my neck and wanted to send me to get a shot to block the pain
I said no and i am glad i stuck to my guns. that goes to show me that i do
know my body. it didn't last long after i was treated with the steroids. well my teeth is another problem and i am saying my prayers they can fix the bridge
I will find out Tuesday . I am having other problems with my face neck and
chest gets hot and very red and every morning i have the red rash on my face . i want to know if anybody tongue is sore I do not no how else to say it? the
rhuemy I saw said there where no markers in my blood. well let me tell you
that my SLE- lupus goes in and out. he said that i have nothing wrong with me.
i was diagnosis with SLE 1995 and been to 3 board certified rhemys and I am
probably in remission . meaning I can live with the flare ups. Sharon I feel for
you and hope you get treatment for it I have had this a couple of times and yes my hair even hurt. I was to go on vacation to Chicago and i felt so lousy
with my head and hair I cancelled the plain trip. I lost on that deal I will
never make reservations a month ahead of time. Silly me so good luck and you are in my prayers . thanks for listing.

Zimms, thanks for the prayers! I have an appt with my rheumy in December so I have a list of things to talk to her about and I am also asking for copies of all my labs. I do have the red face and chest. But it doesn't look like a rash as it is flat so I don't know what it is. I already have RA, Sjogren and Fibromyalgia. I sure hope I don't have to add another to the list but it all goes with the territory. I'm sorry you have to pass up your trip but believe me, I do understand. I am wanting to go to Disneyland so bad but I know there is no way I can go right now.

diznyfrk, keep the faith you will get to Disneyland it just takes awhile for
flare ups to clear up. and i hope the rheumy can answer all your questions
and fix you up. please keep me updated .

Have any of you done a double strand DNA test yet?? It's a definitive for Lupus. The high end
marker is a 9 and I'm a 13 so it's a positive for me. There's also a blood speckled pattern test they
can do to see how the immune system is doing...High end is 49...I'm a 250!! cry I have arthritis,
fibro, lupus, heart issues, nerve damage in legs, spine is messed up (no fixing to it), glitches in
my brain and now I came down with tremors. A lot of this will show in blood tests. I had a good
doctor who did these tests for me and now get SSD as I sent in 2" of medical files from this
year alone.

I had the dsDNA test but it was negative. The speckle pattern? Are you referring to titers?

p/my rheumy I don't have lupus.  I have a bad back pain nerve pain and nerve damage.  I have something like an autoimmune I flare ups along my nerves and if I have a injury it attacks it.  Flare ups also caused by trauma stubbed toe mosquito bites this all on my left side I have lost 4 teeth on my lft side non on right.  I have left sided base of head pressure or Headache, Intractable Migraines, Fatigue, Raynaud's vasculitis, factor II genetic prothrombin, vit d b12 LOW,megaloblastic anemia, HSV II, Varicelia virus
