Great now I cant eat banana's.

My lips swelled and tongue, numbness and burning to both. Ended up with wheels (sp) that have been coming and going for the past week. Dr. said I should have went to the ER Sunday but I wasnt short of breath. He said that the prednisone Im taking probably saved my life. Now I have to carry an epi pen all the time not just leave it at home. Still fighting the itchiness and now probably have to go see an immunologist/allergist because banana's are very rare to have such a severe allergic reaction too. I know they would have kept me overnight but I took benedryl and my husband was up constantly checking me. Cant afford more medical bills thanks to still waiting for disability and only having one income.

  (((hugs))) That must have been a terrible experience. I'm glad you were taking the pred at the time since the doc said it probably saved your life. I never would have thought banana's could have that kind of reaction, but we never know. I hope your appt goes well and that itchiness gets alot better soon. Please keep us updated and take care. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

bananas...! that is strange. i'm glad you were ont he predinose and it kept things from getting even worse. hope all the allergy symptoms go away quickly!

Are you allergic to latex? There is a strong association between the two - also an association between allergies to birch trees and bananas. You might want to read up a bit because once a person has an allergy to bananas there often can be a reaction to kiwi and avocados too, especially if they are allergic to latex.

ides, Im a R.N., but for the past 5 years, latex products have gone by the way side. Gloves are now or was 5 years ago non latex. So basically I have really come in contact with latex, nor have I with in my home. Since starting the zyrtec, My wheals have disapated (sp) thank god!!!!

I have a friend that is allergic to bananas as well, so maybe it isn't as uncommon.

Anyhow, I hope you feel better soon and everything gets under control!
