OUCH SUNBURN!!!!

Just got home from spending some time with my sister and her kids in their backyard and for the most part was under the shade tree and if I wasn't, I had sunscreen on and still have BAD sunburn.  Come to find out now that my antibiotic and one of the other drugs I am on for the bladder infection make you more sensitive to the sun (more than we already are because of the lupus).  Any ideas on how to make the painful sunburn less painful?

The only thing I can think of off hand is aloe vera gel. The gel is very soothing and cooling. Maybe others will have some more ideas for you. I hope the sunburn doesn't throw you into a flare. You bring up something important for all of us about checking the side effects of our meds. I just recently found out that several of my meds make you more sun sensitive - just what we need. Take care and I hope you get some relief from your sunburn.

A couple years ago I had gotten a really bad sunburn and my b/f bought me a spray bottle and a rotating fan. He sprayed me with the water bottle and then I had the fan on me it was great and helped alot.

You can also try cool baths, not to cold and not too hot.

Oatmeal baths (cool, not hot) are supposed to also take the sting out, but I've never used anything but the aloe vera gel.

i got sunburned over the weekend too!! just on my shoulders though and not that bad....i have only burned ONCE in my life before!! the medications i am on now (after being diagnosed) must make me much more sensitive to sun..my mom gave me some aloe vera-lotion that was made specifially for after-sun exposure so its not quite as sticky as aloe vera. i think she got it at walgreens...

does anyone know exacly what percentage of people with lupus are sensitive to the sun?? i hope i dont flare!

sorry i forgot to add that applying vitamin e frequently can really help speed up the healing process...keeping the skin hydrated as much as possible can help temporarily relieve the pain also...

My 13yo daughter came home from school with a sunburn last week. They told all the kids to go out and play in the field and she didn't have any sun protection. She was hurting for certain. (and she doesn't even have lupus!) I sprayed her with "Dermoplast" when she got home. It's a pain relieving spray for pain and itch from sunbrun, insect bites and minor burns and scrapes. It's really good stuff but it's a bit oily. Other than that I highly recommend it. I hope you feel better. I know if I ever get a sun burn I'm sick for several days.
