Hi everyone,

just when you think things can't get any worse, they do!!

My latest test results showed that I am diabetic. I have to go for a confirmation test on Friday then they will discuss options. They also said to try to keep off the pred until my glucose levels are lower, the last test they were 11 & 12. So, keeping my fingers crossed for no flare, cos I'll be in trouble with no steroids. If I do get a flare and it gets too bad then I can take them, but only as a last resort! She said it could be steroid induced diabetes, but that I probably had a predisposition for getting diabetes anyway. Oh, happy days!!

Sorry to hear this, bummer! I hope you didn't just quit the pred. without a decent taper strategy. I can't get any lower than my 5mg per day without serious pain in my fingers and joints, etc.

Fingers crossed for no flare.

I'm sorry about the diabetes.  Thats what happened to me too.

I was on a high dose of prednisone, then WHAM!!  3 months later, I was diagnosed with diabetes

Lion I know you have been concerned about this. Wow that is a really tough place to be. Danged if ya do and danged if ya done. I'll be praying you don't have any flares and they can get things straightened around.

Lion, I'm also sorry to hear about the diabetes - just what you don't need on top of everything else. I really hope you don't end up flaring while you are off of the steroids - it must be kind of scary going off of them. I hope the docs can get this under control soon. Keep us updated on how things are going. Take care

Hi Diane-

Well, its a good think they found it.  I take the pills and they work alright with diet changes.  I don't know if that is an option for you.  Even with big shots of steroids, the pills have been keeping me at around 100.  Also, I had high blood pressure and was on lisinopril for it and when they treated my diabetes, it brought my blood pressure down and with the lisinopril (which I no longer needed since by high BP was tied to the rise in blood sugar) it dropped really dangerous low and I passed out and ended up in the ER.  So if you have high bp, you may want to test it alot once they start treating the diabetes.  I wish they would screen everyone for diabetes before treating them for high blood pressure.  I'm glad they are taking care of this for you, maybe you will feel better once they treat it, however they treat it.

Hey Lion, sorry to hear the news. I am very curious about how high your bs goes. I can no longer have any sugar because it causes me to go hypoglycemic. I have a fear of turning diabetic myself.

This has and still is really hard because it was such a shock, and I had no idea what diabetes was really. I have had some great support & information from the diabetes forum. I think it's a case of better the devil you know!
I go this morning at 11.10 and again at 1.10 for my last bloods. I won't be able to get the results until 30th though because I'm off on holiday tonight for a week. I think I need it! I will get my bp checked also just to make sure, but my bp has always been on the low side.
I think that they should keep an extra eye on people on pred with their sugars. maybe do a fasting glucose test every now & again and hope to pick anything suspicious early. I have been told the vision will correct itself, which I am soooooooo relieved about. Take care everyone, will post when I get back. x x

I'm sorry you are having such troubles. I have had diabetes since 1992 and it stinks, but you can manage it takes a lot of work and dedication, but it can be done..

I have had steroid induced diabetes before and actually got up to 6 insulin shots a day.  I was on 120mg of prednisone a day at that time.  When I weaned off the steroids the diabetes went away.  I was up to 60mg of prednisone a day recently for cerebritis and didn't have the blood sugar problems.  Hopefully when you get the steroid out of your system,  the blood sugar will normalize.  I also had alot of vision loss which corrected itself after coming off the steroids.  Take care of yourself and God Bless,  Judy

i have a question, that the current question spawned. now i read mj's post, but when u have a medicine/chemical induced diabetes does it normally go away if the med is discontinued, or is it something that 99% is permanent? (don't mean to get you more down, just curious)
