Did those of you who were dx with Lupus have positive ANA tests, or does the doc dx with syptoms??

Hi Annie, Lupus is dx'd by having 4 of 11 particular criteria. There is a link in my signature so you can see the list. The positive ANA may or may not be present, but is most often a part of the dx. I hope this helps. Blessings!

Although I've had 4 of the 11 criteria for years, it wasn't until I had a positive ANA (2,306) did I get a diagnosis (9/07). On that visit he ran more of the specific autoimmune tests and my anti dsDNA was 2,256.

I did have an old rheumy back where I use to live that said I probably had lupus but might never have the test results to prove it. He was a good doctor and treated me for lupus without the positive blood tests.

I was dxed w/o the ANA but it takes a doctor who is willing to go without blood work- I am actually hearing of more and more rheumys who think the ANA blood work is unreliable at best and so they ignore it.

I initially tested with ANA - but was only diagnosed with Raynaud's based on symptoms. After I had a peracardio effusion (1 year later), my Rheumy decided I had Lupus since a major organ was involved. Jenny

I had a 1:2560 ANA and I still don't know what's wrong with me. (sigh)

I have always had a positive ANA but my DX was based on my kidney involvement, blood work and symptoms. I do meet the critieria, but my DX came easily due to my kidneys.

I was diagnosed with a positive 1:640.  It went negative for 4 years during my remission. It's now back to positive, but I don't know the number!

Oh, I was diagnosed by my symptoms too.  Anemia, severe pleurisy, butterfly rash, and ALL the positive anti bodies you can think of..... I was a mess....
