MRSA at my daughters' school

I can't even begin to say how angry I am..the school didn't close or anything-they just disinfected at night while the kids were at home and let them go back the next day.-I would think they would want to clean the school more than one night for something like this?

The worse part is they didn't tell us until today that this even happened-it happened on Thursday of last week.

Has anyone had this happen at there childrens' school and if so, how did they handle it? Did they close the school for a day or two to disinfect or no?

I just don't like any of this...it is a serious infection that doesn't go away with normal antibotics right? It's sort of like a super bug?

I'm going to go and read up a bit more on it but, I would like to hear your comments on this..People that have A/I would have to be very careful with MRSA-let alone the kids themselves..

We have had several cases of MRSA in our township schools here in southern New Jersey.  It is a bit scary.  I had one a few years ago.  Lucky for me it didn't break the blood barrier, but boy was it a mess to deal with.  I was very sick and it was hard to find an antibiotic that would treat it.  

Our schools did shut down and disinfect.  The high school shut down twice because the superintendant wasn't happy with the way it was done initially.  The first I heard of an out break was when it hit a school 40 minutes south of us and the following week it was in our backyard (sort of speak).  I was really suprised at how quickly it spread.

I would contact the school and see what they are doing about this and notify others in your community if nothing has been done.  The state where you live may also have rule and guidelines that dictate what the schools need to do in the matter.  I wish you luck - Kristin

We have seven cases in the high school that my son and daughter attend. All are boys on the football team. The school board held an in-depth meeting with the students explaining what MRSA is, how its acquired, and how to try to prevent it. The school was disinfected as was the local football stadium (and artificial turf). Letters were sent to all 35 schools in the county with the same in-depth info. Parents were encouraged to call with questions. I was pleased with the response, and so glad that we are taking a pro-active approach in our school system.

However, I am postponing an elective mini-surgery to remove a mole near my eye. I would rather live with the mole (its non cancerous) than take a chance.

Hi Aggie.  MRSA is actually very common and has been around for many years.  Many persons carry it in their nose as normal flora.  The problem comes when it invades an opening; something as simple as kids picking their nose, then scratching hard, giving the bacteria an entry.  It certainly doesn't hurt to disinfect the school, but it really isn't going to help either since MRSA is everywhere (think grocery carts, buses, daycares, nursing homes, etc).  I was a microbiologist, then an epidemiologist who founded Nevadans for Antibiotic Awareness.  The best thing everyone can do is wash their hands and keep sores clean and covered.  Butterflake

  I agree that MRSA is very common. It's widespread but, hopefully with all the media attention its getting this year maybe it will get under control soon. I keep a bottle of germ-x with me at all times.

Well I hate to say this but it's getting even worse. My son picked it up in Iraq. He was a medic and it only takes a cut to start it. Plus everyone is together in small quarters. The military actually tests them when they come home. They called my house looking for him he was traveling to see me when he got back. So if he got it right after getting there add 13 months plus handing out meds and treating wounds every day. Do the math. That was in 2004. We would send phamplets warning not to share towels wash clothes shoes razors or any number of personel items.

I want to thank everyone for there posts, I feel a ton better about this. I read the papers they sent home, it was the same page on the CDC's web site. 

I just hope that the child or children that have it are alright. It just said the parents were pro-active in treating the children.

Butterflake is right. It' s more widespread than you think. I was a school nurse and we see it more than you think. It is very prevalent in the community. I have battled it constantly since being placed on immunosuppresive drugs. I was colonized from working in the hospitals. I was in the hospital for weeks, had to get a port and have home health for a month. It is dangerous, but they have come up with some new ATB's to treat it. Judy

Hi Everyone,

I am from the Lyme board but am here because my daughter has a positive ANA-we are waiting for the titer. She was neg for SCL70. She has a lot of Lyme symptoms, but as you all know it mimics Lupus and many other diseases.

The reason I am chiming in is that my Lyme Dr cautioned me with my dogs and PICC line care. He advised that dogs carry MRSA on their paws as well.

Just wanted to share...
