Stem cell transplant for lupus

I've been reading about a lupus study in which docs remove some of your stem cells, then give you high dose chemo to erase the harmful autoimmune response that comes with lupus. Then they transplant your stem cells back into you. Results sound good.  The web site is http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT00230035

Has anyone read about this?

Hi Donna, I havn't read it yet but I have heard they were doing stem cell research for lupus. Thanks for the link I will check it out. I must say that it's nice they are actually trying to find new ways to find a cure or at least new ways to fight this. It's about time!

Northwestern University has been using stem cell treatment for lupus patients since 1997.  They have been very successful but it is only for patients who respond to nothing else and are in very bad shape.  The procedure is risky and very expensive but most patients have responded well.

My doctor is one of the main clinical researchers and helps to run the program.

Hi Bill and Carol.  Thanks for the reply.  Bill, your doc is starting phase II of his study, but I don't think that I qualify.  I read the link you sent me.  It's interesting.
