I know from raising fish and also from my pigment disorder that there are certain spectrums of UV that are different than others for those with sunsensitivity. An option, if you want to save energy and use fluorescent might be to try some of the aquarium bulbs. They are more pricey but offer just about any spectrum you can imagine, and there are even moonlight bulbs. They last a long time, come in the standard sizes, and are of better quality than home depot bulbs usually. I think flickers are more from the balast than the bulb, which can be replaced. They even have the new screw in bulb shapes, but they are for reptiles. Actually, the reptile specialists in pet stores or salt water specialists often know quite a bit about lighting.
For vitiligo repigmentation, which is considered a type of autoimmune disease by many, if not most, dermatologists, certain UVs are okay. I don't remember, but there is likely a compromise that might be worked to give us something better than incandescent and more ecologically sound. The brightness of the incadescent givesme a headache.
What would be nice would be to have the government take everyone's needs into consideration and come up with a fluorescent std that actually might be beneficial (if it can be) or at least not harmful to any of us. Maybe there will be lower energy incandescents.
I found this from the Marshall Protocol Study Site, it's kind of technical but has lots of good info. If there's a way to ask, I want to find out about spectrums and the pet bulbs.
