Tonsillectomy and Lupus

Hello,

I am having trouble with my tonsills and am considering having them removed. Has anyone done this with Lupus? Did it cause any unforeseen problems?

Hi Ti, I don't have answers for you except that you should probably list your meds in your post. People on prednisone sometimes (with Dr.'s instruction) will up their dose for some period before/during or after the surgery. There is a post about this in Lupus Resources (by Lynnwood: Flare Care). Oh..I am on plaq, hydrochlorothiazide and that's it! I finished my pred taper. I have not discussed this with my rheumy yet as my normal appt was just cancelled.

Ti,

  Tonsil problems was one of my first symptoms from lupus. I had chronic strep throat or tonsilitis for a year. I begged my doctor to take mine out but he wouldn't. Anyway after that year I had no more problems with them and still haven't.

   I hope this gets better for you soon or if you have the surgery I wish you the best. Please take care and keep us updated. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Ti:

I had my tonsils removed in 1996, I was 34 yeas old when they were removed. I had serious problems with strep throat and tonsillitis. I didn't have a firm DX of lupus then, I didn't get my offical DX in 2001. I have to say the pain is pretty intense aafter taking them out. I also had a difficult time eating, even if it was ice cream. My voice sounded different the first few weeks. I think it took me 6 weeks to fully recover, where I could eat anything.

In my case, things may have changed, but I was only allowed to eat cold or room temperature food. I wasn't allowed any hot food, tea, coffee, etc for 3 weeks. I also wasn't allowed red popsicles or red colored beverages. This is done so that you don't mistake it for bleeding.

I was very tired afterwards and it lasted about 4 weeks. I'm certain if I was on steroids at that time and they had given the increased dose before surgical procedures I would have felt better than I did. I'd talk to your Rheumy about the possibility that they may remove your tonsils, he should be able to tell you what you need to do to avoid a flare.
