fevers with a flare

Hello,

This is my first time posting. I am experiencing a flare that has been going on for a few weeks. Currently my dr has me on 20 mg pred. Last night I started running a temp of 99.7. I am also taking ibuproben, flexiral and vicadin for pain. Anyway my fever is up to 100.2 now. I do have an appointment with my rhuematolgist in the morning which is good. I have had SLE for about 7 years and this is the first time I have ever had a fever. Is this normal for lupus flares? and when do you call your dr?

Low grade fever can be normal but it could also be a sign of infection.

usually when i have a  flare , it does start with a fever that gets worse..i get hot and cold chills.i feel like i have the flu.. It is good that you already have an appt set up .. the best thing to do is to notify your doctor RIGHT AWAY when anything like that happenes

smilewinkgrin  i Donna and Keo, welcome you both to the group! Donna usually when people first come here I tell them they should take their temp about 4 times a day and write it down and give it to their rheumy. Of course it could be from somthing else but it can easily be a symptom of a flare. Like Keo mentioned you start to feel like you got the flu really bad. I'm glad you got a rheumy appt tomorrow hopefully they will have some answers for you. I actually ran a low grade fever for about 6 months until the plaquenil they put me on started working.

Hi Donna and Keo,

Donna, I do think that fevers are not unusual for lupus patients and my temperature typically rises when I'm in my worst flares. I hope you get some answers form your rheumy tomorrow. Your question, When to call your rheumy, is a good one to ask tomorrow. I'd be curious as to the answer you get.

I'm glad you're both here and hope you gain a lot of help and support from this forum.

Hello Donna,

Im new here also...I run low grade fevers also. I also seem to be in a several week long flare, off and mostly on since Feb. I am never sure when to call the Dr. My PCP is clueless and my Rheumy is at Johns Hopkins, 2 hrs away so I seem to be in a very bad habit of waiting until things are so bad I really think Im in trouble before "bothering" the Rheumy. This has not worked well for me! I asked the Rheumy when I should call her. She said with any concern. I still dont really know when to call or email her. I think I can determine when its serious serious but Im still not comfortable with knowing when to call.

Waiting to call regarding pain doesnt work...I seem to have an extremely conservative Dr when it comes to pain meds! I have quickly learned that I need not be "tough" at my appointments, I really do need to share the pain levels I reach cause there is no "tough" winner!

Good luck and be sure to post if your doc can give you some guidance for calls...

Yup, I find wild variations in temperature can be set off by all kinds of random events -- and it may not necessarily be the same random events that set me off the week before. I use the 3-day rule -- if it's gone in less than 3 days, I don't worry about it...if it lasts 3 days I scamper off to a doctor! Depending on how it presents, it's either my pcp (an internist) or my rhuemy.... My doctors mostly don't care unless a temp is over 101, even if you do (like me) have a below normal usual temperature. I've found that as time goes on I get closer and closer to being able to determine if I have a temp or not, and even to guess when one's coming on...makes it easier to avoid them! The temps are very definitely associated with inflammation for me - it may be something a few ibuprofen can control, or something more.... Take care,

Thank you for your replys. It is very helpful. when I have flare ups  they usually last a day or two and and usually with rest will subside. This flare up however is been going on for a few weeks, and then the fever started last night so I was a little scared. Anyway I will let you know what the dr says.
