protein in urine

I'm new to this site and hope I am using it correctly. I have a question- I have protein in my urine and my doc wants to do a kidney biopsy but there have been several other times when I have had protein (generally when I am ill with an unrelated illness such as a cold or stomach bug or when I was pregnant)and then it has gone away as I get better and my stress related lupus flare dies down. Has anyone else had this false alarm happen? And in light of this should i be cautious about jumping into a biopsy when my docs have been trigger happy before for no real reason? Should I wait a week until I am feeling better to do another blood test (i've had constipation and stomach probs for a couple of weeks which I feel brought about the lupus flare)? I don't like to rush into medical procedures and each time when the protein level has gone down with a second test my docs have calmed down and changed their tune. ephiz

i just had this prob. i had high protein in my urine, and both my pcp and reumy wanted a kidney biopsy, so i was referred to a nephrologist for my kidneys, he ran all his tests and he said my protein in urine was hardly there, so he said i was ok. they r just going to be checkin my urine alot more now to watch for changes. I agree u should see a nephrologist!

I would definatly go to the nephrologist. If there is something there, it can usually be controlled very well if it is caught the beginning stages. I do have Kidney involvement and it is something you can't just brush off. I go to the nephrologist every 3-4 weeks and get blood work done every other week. As Ginny said, it is better safe than sorry!
