Can lupus affect your stomach?

I am having my first rheumy appt. Tuesday. I am getting everything together in terms of paper work and lists of symptoms. My question is, can lupus affect your stomach? I have terrible problems with nausea. I had an EGD done in April, and they found a hiatal hernia, but too small (he said) to cause problems. He also said my stomach had signs of chronic inflamation. I have taken lots of NSAIDS in the past for back issues, but not for the last 2 years or so. I would think my tummy would have calmed down since then. I am on Nexxium, but some days it doesn't seem to help at all. I have what I guess I could call "flares" of my stomach problems. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this, or experienced it?

I wanted to welcome you to this forum. I don't get to come around these days as often as I would like, but you will find some wonderful, supportive people here.

I've never had problems related directly from the lupus, but more from chronic steroid use and chemo and such. However, Lupus can affect any part of our bodies, so I wouldn't be surprised at anything. I know there are some people on this forum that have irritable bowel and possible Chrohn's if i'm not mistaken.

Someone will come along with a better reply! I'm sorry you are dealing such dreadful issues! Judy

Yes, inflammation from Lupus can show up anywhere - I wouldn't be surprised to find it in the stomach. Even if it's not related, ALL symptoms you experiance should be reported to the dr. Drs are trained in what symptoms are important and relevant ..... we aren't! :-) So we need to mention everything we can think of.

I also think it's important not to "diagnose" beforehand -- let the dr do his/her job, don't go in and tell them what you think it is.....that gets everyone off on the wrong foot, most of us have found.

Hi Alli, I'm glad you are getting all your stuff together for the rheumy. I'm sorry your havig tummy problems. I take aciphex for my. I have esohagas problems and a hiatial hernia. I don't know if lupus would affect you stomach or not but it can effect your liver and other organs. You know I go by the theory if it bothers me I tell the dr. If you had a fever a month ago tell him/her about it. losing hair, sores in your mouth, a hang nail. It doesn't matter. I hae these little red s;pots on my hand just a few looks like I was writing with a red pin. No big deal to me but it sure bothered my rheumy. That's what they get paid for. Just write it all down. plus if anyone in your family has any help problems.

Anyway let us know how your rheumy goes. I hope they are good and listen to you. It took me 4 or 5 of them to be able to find one I could deal with. That's not uncommon around here. So just remember if they stink keep looking if they are good count your blessing.

Alli, I've been having stomach issues for about a year now, but i don't get nausea, my stomach just gets bloated and hurts and i know that there is the possibility of everything in our bodies getting inflammed. My doctor told me that my intestines get inflammed and on occasion my chest and rib joints get inflammed. And I guess there is nothing they can do about that as my doctor tells me. I'm on plaquenil which does rough up your stomach a bit so he just tells me to take pepcid. I think I need to take Carol's advice and find a new rheumy! I just wanted to let you know, I feel your pain. Take care!

Hi Alli, yup, stomach issues are not uncommon in Lupus.  I have had my fair share in the past.  Like Lynnwood said, Lupus can affect any organ, blood, tissue, etc.  Definitely bring this up with your doctor.
