Question about donating blood and bone marrow

I've got a question about donating blood?  My father has Myelodysplastic disease and is in need of a blood transfusion and possibly a bone marrow transplant.  He is refusing to do the blood transfusion because it's coming from someone he doesn't know.  I am a match to his blood type and a possible match to his bone marrow.  Can I donate blood and/or marrow for him?  I've tried to look it up with no success.  He has currently thrown in the towel and has resolved to die.   Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bry, I'm sorry to hear about your father. I will put him on my prayer list if you don't mind. As far as blood donations normally you can give blood. I would recomend you call the red cross in your area. If you don't like what they say call again and get someone else. I know that sounds funny but some people don't know and just guess. Of course if you are in the mist of a flare or infection or fever you can't give until you are over it. Which of course is the same with anyone. You might ask the red cross about the bone marrow program. I know Barb (in this group) needs a bone marrow transplant and she may have info for you. Maybe you can give her a shout out.

Tell your dad I understand being tired and wanting to give up but it's not allowed. He has plenty of time to sleep later.

Some blood banks will not take blood from a person with an active AI disease.  There is also the question of what meds you are on.  Here is a site that discusses the problem.  The only way you are going to get an answer is to discuss this with your father's doctor(s).

Thanks for your support. I've got an appointment with my GP on Wednesday and I'll ask him if I can donate.

My husband is a registered donor and he donated his bone marrow for a lady who had cancer, and the company that was used was Bonfils Blood Center, there may be one in your area.  The gentleman who coordinated the care between my husband and the cancer patient was wonderful, so they really have a quality staff.  Also the marrow was taken from the arm and not the hip so recovery was no time at all for my husband.  I hope you are able to help your father.

I don't know about the Red Cross criteria, but I just checked into the possiblity of donating blood through INOVA, a local blood bank.  It clearly states right on front of the brochure that any type of AI disease renders the individual disqualified.  Not sure why, but perhaps it relates to the drugs we typically take.  Although the drugs that I take (mtx and enbrel) are not listed as disqualifying.
