Trouble with blood clotting

Does anyone else have trouble clotting after they get blood taken?  I had blood tests taken yesterday and before the butterfly needle was taken out of my arm completely, my arm started to swell.  I now have quite the sore lump (about the diameter of a golf ball, maybe larger) underneath my skin.  Just curious if this is a very common thing for others, and what anyone's done to help with it..if there's anything.  This is the second time for me.  All the other times I've got blood taken I've maybe bruised a bit, but not ended up with sore lumps afterwards.

I have trouble with the blood clotting...usually the person drawing blood will have to hold gauze on it for 5-10 mintues and I always get a horrible bruise underneath the skin but I also have low platelet count. I have not had a lump form underneath the skin. If it is still painful and if a lump is still there...I would deffiantly ask your doctor about it. Also might not hurt to mention it to the person drawing the blood next time you get it done.

Thanks for your reply Amy.  I am planning on mentioning it do my GP when I see her next about my concerns around the clotting.  I have done some reading on the internet, and I'm not sure if it was trouble clotting now, or if it was actually trouble with the blood flow...as in the blood had started to clot in my vein before she pulled the needle out.  Of course I'm not sure, because I'm only guessing here, with a little reading from the internet.  All I know is that I was really cold that day, and the blood didn't seem to be coming out fast into the tube...I thought it was 'cause I was cold..but then I was worried about my arm swelling, and the tenderness, etc..what the nurse told me there was that putting ice on it might help, and gave me an icepack...she didn't really tell me much else.  Just things to ponder, and I want to take as best care of myself as possible..

Ice and continued pressure both help me from getting lumps (clots) under the skin. Ice increases clot time, which you want after they are done. (And warm before!) The pressure should be applied gently as they pull out the needle, increasing as the needle comes out. When they are using a butterfly needle it needs to be held at the correct angle the entire time - otherwise it can go thru the vein and cause the kind of lump you are talking about.

At least those are the issues I've had with it...too darn bad they have to take blood all the time!

I have one right now from an iv. Like lynnwood says, if it doesn't go away, you should have it looked at. It should get better with the treatment she suggested. There are some nasty infections around so if it seems hot or weeps liquid, gets real red or anything abnormal I would make sure to get it checked out in urgent care. I know I just don't heal up as fast as I used to, but this can put you at risk for infection too. I used to draw blood and haven't seen one as large as you describe personally, but have seen and had some ugly ones! Hope it gets better quick.
