how do you get disability?

If you are in the USA, start with www.ssa.gov. Of course, your doctors need to agree that you are disabled, so maybe it's better to start with that conversation.

First you must get a diagnosis of lupus. The direct site online is www.disability.gov Even if you haven't been diagnosed start now by getting copies of all your medical records from all the docs you went to about your illness- even if you no longer see them. I went to 13 docs before I was diagnosed. Social Security will get your records, but things go so much faster when you have all your documentation. Getting records costs money, but it's worth it. Make copies for you to keep and copies for social sec.

I applied online and answered every question. I then gathered ALL the info required (medical records, birth certificate, ect) and took it all to my social security office before they even called me.

I say to start getting everything together now cause you may be very, very sick by the time you submit. I could only walk using a rolling walker when I quit work. I hope this helps. Good luck! Love, Butterflake

 

I would physically go in to my SSA office to apply for disability because depending on your work history you  may not quallify for SSDI but qualify for SSI. I didn't get SSDI I got SSI instead. Also make sure your doctors are on board with you. I wish you luck.

i am only 23, that is the part where people look at me like i am crazy, i cannot get ss because i have not been working long enough, i do have a lupus diagnosis and many more, i have not spoke to my doctor about getting disability yet but it was my doc that told me i can not go in the sun because i almost pass out on my way just to the car. it makes my bp drop real low...my doc got it at 77/67 and that was when i had a chance to rest.

My daughter Cheryl was having the exact same problems in her twenties....she was 26 when she began passing out at work. She was FINALLY diagnosed with lupus but had a long battle to get disability because she was so young; I think it is harder if you're very young. Cheryl finally got her disability last year, she's 30 now.

Redrose is right, if you don't qualify for SSDI because you haven't worked long enough you can apply for SSI. That's the option for those who don't have enough work credits. You should probably get an attorney to help you with your disability claim.....and just keep trying, even if you are denied, you can always appeal! Most people are denied the first time through; you have to be REALLY stubborn and never give up!
