Hello, I am 28 an recently have been experiencing joint pain and stiffness in my toes and my right thumb. I went to the doctor nd did some blood work. My ESR is 20 and I also have a positive ana titer 1:160 speckled pattern. He wants to refer tme tp a rheumatologist. To be honest I am scared what does this all mean? If I do have Lupus or rheumatois arthritis, what do you do after that ? Can I live a normal life? Will I be in pain forever? I just want to find out what is going on and want can I do to make it go away. Is this a one time thing or because of these results does this for sure mean that I even have something? Any advice would be great. My fingers are aching too just from typing. I really am scared.

Please don't worry, but do visit a rheumatologist. Right now, you simply have some test results and some symptoms that indicate you should see a rheumy.
There are a lot of other things that a +ANA can indicate, not just lupus. Many of the medications available today can slow or even stop the progression of these auto-immune diseases.
Your best action is to make the rheumy appointment and try not to worry. We need to conserve our energy for the good things in life rather than spin it away on worry!!
Glad you've joined us here at HW!

Lynnwood, thank you for your advice. I am in the process of seeing a rheumy and hopefully everything is all right. Thank you for your time.
