negative ANA?

Just wondering if anybody out there had a negative ANA but still has lupus? I found out my ANA was negative so was wondering if lupus could be ruled out? Also wanted to add that it was 1:40

 My ANA has been negative and positive for years, one of the reasons why it took years for them to diagnose me. I don't know why it does this, or how it can even be possible (asked my doctor but he really didn't have an answer either tongue ).  I do know, after doing tons of research, that 5% of people can have a negative ANA test and still have Lupus.

A negative ANA has no ratio to report. Some doctors consider a low positive ANA such as 1:40 same as a negative.

Yes, you can have a negative ANA and still have lupus. Check the website www.lupus.org for "How to diagnosis lupus" - you have to have 4 of 11 symptoms.

I am one of those negative ANA lupus suffers. Take a look at my signature and know that except for a high white cell count all my blood work is normal.

Hey! I just saw your post and it reminded me of a reply I posted to someone regarding ANA the other day. I am too lazy to type it out again lol so I will  just paste my reply here: My ana was 1:160 and it was enough to gain attention from my DR ( that was 4 years ago). I recently met with my DR and he actually told me that many docs do not take ANA into consideration when diagnosing Lupus because ANA is so unreliable. He said that it can change (go from pos to neg) he said he treats patients usually based on past ANA test and also current symptoms that they have.   Hope that helps.

Me too my test went from posative to negative now posative again. I have lot's of symptoms but none of my other test are posative either so we hang in limbo
