crusty ears and nostrils

I have systemic lupus but specifically a TON of "skin problems related to lupus," is what my doctors keep saying. I think that means they don't really know specifically what's causing problems everywhere. I just stopped taking Methotrexate a month ago because my rheumy didn't think it was helping my skin enough.

Now I have painful sores/scabs in my nostrils (both sides) and on the insides of my ears (both sides). I haven't had any sores in the mouth yet, though. I am sniffly too, which is making everything worse. I don't pick at them except when my ears are completely blocked and my hearing is impaired, which has happened multiple times. They don't seem to heal ever... just better and worse versions.

Two of my doctors have looked in my ears and nose but both seemed more concerned with other things so I let it go too. Now they really hurt, are crusty and my nose bleeds every day. My rheumy gave me a strong steroid cream (Halog) to put in my ears and other rashes... should I put that in my nose?

Rheumy and Dermatologist are thinking of trying me on CellCept next. Waiting for blood work results before they decide.

Such a strange world. Thanks for any help.

Hi Kimberlyrenee. I haven't had nasal ulcers in a few years, but I do remember how painful they can be. I did develop constant stuffiness and there was blood every time I blew my nose. After many months I finally broke down and saw an ear, nose, throat doc. He said one of my sinus cavities was blocked and very infected. I had sinus surgery in April and it's made a huge improvement in my life.

I continue to see my ENT when needed. I still have allergies and since I can't take clariten, he prescribed Astepro which I spray in each nostril 2x day. It works really well.

BTW I've been on Cellcept 22 months for severe CNS problems. It's a great drug and although I still have lots of lupus problems, Cellcept has given me my life back. Anyway, you may want to see an ENT as well as take Cellcept. Love, Butterflake
